The history of Charlotte, North Carolina dates back to 1755 when European colonists first settled the area. Thomas Spratt settled near the Elizabeth neighborhood, and his great-uncle Thomas Polk built a house near the intersection of two Native American trading paths. One path went north-south along the Great Wagon Road and the other ran east-west along Trade Street.
Today, the city’s cultural organizations produce more than 65,000 events each year, ranging from neighborhood festivals to arts education programs. As a result, Charlotte is known for its eclectic arts scene. Charlotte is also home to the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, Charlotte Knights, and the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The city’s climate is humid subtropical, and residents enjoy four distinct seasons.
