In the 1750s, European colonists began settling the area that is now Charlotte. Thomas Spratt settled in the Elizabeth neighborhood, and Thomas Polk, great-uncle of U.S. President James K. Polk, built his home near the intersection of two Native American trading routes: one that ran north-south along the Great Wagon Road, and the other that ran east-west along Trade Street.

The cultural scene in Charlotte is diverse and vibrant. There are more than 65,000 events held annually in the city, ranging from neighborhood festivals to arts education programs. The city is also home to professional sports teams, including the Charlotte Hornets and Carolina Panthers. Fans of sports teams can enjoy Charlotte’s many sporting events at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Charlotte enjoys a humid subtropical climate, with four distinct seasons.

Charlotte has a mild climate, with average temperatures ranging from 30degF in January to 69degF in July. It receives just 2 inches of snow per year, which is less than half the national average. On the other hand, it receives about 43 inches of rain in a typical year.

Charlotte is considered one of the most diverse cities in the United States, with a population of 48 percent white, 35 percent black and six percent Asian. The remaining six percent consists of various ethnic groups and mixed-race individuals. Charlotte is also considered the second most religiously diverse city in America. Almost half of the population is affiliated with Protestant Christianity.
