For weeks, Republicans predicted a “red wave” would carry them to power in Congress, as voters repudiated majority Democrats for failing to tame skyrocketing inflation and address worries about rising crime.
The reality appeared far different early Wednesday. On this episode of #WakeUpCLT To Go, we’re breaking down all of the key races in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House, as Democrats managed to limit Republican gains that were predicted for weeks.
The biggest race in the Carolinas was the hotly contested battle for Senate between Republican Ted Budd and Democrat Cheri Beasley. Budd brought home the victory, earning the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Richard Burr. He was boosted by endorsements from Donald Trump and other influential Republicans, running on a platform against President Joe Biden’s economic policies.
Another big race in North Carolina was for the new 14th Congressional District. Democrat Jeff Jackson, a state senator in the General Assembly, defeated Republican newcomer Pat Harrigan for a seat in Washington. Jackson has supported “red flag” gun laws and wants to codify Roe v. Wade to guarantee a woman’s right to an abortion.

In South Carolina, Gov. Henry McMaster easily won his second four-year term, defeating Democrat Joe Cunningham. McMaster praised the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, but said he wouldn’t support any abortion ban that does not allow exceptions for cases of rape and incest.
And finally, at the North Carolina state level, Republicans won a supermajority in the Senate, but were unable to secure enough seats for a House supermajority. This means, Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto power will remain intact, even if all GOP lawmakers are united — without the help of at least one Democratic lawmaker. #Politics #Election
