Nicole impacts the Carolinas today

Impacts from Nicole will move through the Carolinas this morning and all day. The once-hurricane could bring flooding rains and tornadoes to the Carolinas.

As a result of forecast impacts from Nicole, the National Weather Service has issued a series of severe weather advisories including:

Today – Weather Aware Day:

Scattered bands of heavy rain and some strong storms. Rain will be heavy at times with bands of thunderstorms. Higher rain totals will be west of Charlotte. Winds could gust outside of any thunderstorms up to 20-30 mph through the day. Highs in the low 70s.

This timing keeps changing, but the band of thunderstorms that is closest to the center of the low will be the one that has the best chance for a spin-up tornado.

The area that is now Charlotte was first settled by European colonists around 1755. Thomas Spratt and his family were settlers, and settled near the area that is now known as the Elizabeth neighborhood. Thomas Polk, the great-uncle of U.S. President James K. Polk, settled near the Elizabeth area and built a house at the intersection of two Native American trading routes. One path was north-south along the Great Wagon Road, and the other ran east-west along Trade Street.

There are several breweries in Charlotte, and a trip here is not complete without tasting local craft beer. The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, Sycamore Brewing, and Divine Barrel Brewing are excellent places to visit while in the area. All three offer tours and tastings. These breweries are a great experience, and visitors can learn about the brewing process and appreciate the care that goes into their craft.

If you are looking for a fun activity while visiting Charlotte, consider taking one of the city’s food tours. Feast food tours in Uptown Charlotte are available on Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets cost $65 per person. You can also check out the Charlotte International Arts Festival, which is spread out all over the city.

For art lovers, Charlotte is home to the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. The museum has more than a million pieces in its collection, including works by Jasper Johns and Edgar Degas. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions. It is one of the most popular attractions in Charlotte, and is open every day but Tuesday. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is free on Sunday.
