History of Charlotte North Carolina
Charlotte is a city located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. It is one of the largest cities in the state with a population of over 800,000. The community is home to several highly rated schools.
Charlotte was founded in 1750. In the early years, the city grew from a small hamlet to a large town. Cotton became the primary economy. Several textile mills began to develop.
By the mid-1800s, a gold discovery had moved the region from a primarily plantation economy to a trade and industrial hub. Charlotte had the advantages of being close to a thriving railroad network. The Atlantic, Tennessee, and Ohio Railroad opened trains from Charlotte in 1860.
During this period, Charlotte grew as a wholesale and distribution center. In 1913, Philip L. Lance opened his peanut butter cracker factory in the city.
With the help of the newly developed highway system, Charlotte also grew as a trucking center for the Southeastern United States. As a result of the “Good Roads” program in 1921, a network of paved highways was built.
After the Civil War, Charlotte continued to grow as a wholesale and distribution center. New ring of suburbs around the city sprang up in the early decades of the twentieth century. Some of these new suburbs were blue-collar, while others were middle-class neighborhoods.
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Charlotte’s economy included textile manufacturing and other industries. Two of the region’s richest mines were less than two miles from Charlotte Square.
