Charlotte North Carolina – History, Culture, and Fun
Charlotte, North Carolina, has a rich history that extends back to the American Revolution. A gold rush brought gold miners to the area and helped to transform the city from a village to a town.
The town became the center of commerce for the region. The area developed as a textile and manufacturing centre. By the 1880s, cotton mills were built in Charlotte and other towns in the Piedmont region. Other factories produced gunpowder and chemical products.
During the early twentieth century, Charlotte became a major wholesale distribution point for the southeastern United States. Banking and retailing also expanded during this period.
Charlotte was the site of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. Queens College in Charlotte was the first college in North Carolina. The school was chartered in 1857.
A series of bronze plaques, known as Charlotte Liberty Walk, is located throughout the city. These monuments tell the story of the Charlotte’s role during the American Revolution.
Several of the buildings in the downtown area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The ten-story Hotel Charlotte is another landmark.
There are several schools in Charlotte that have been recognized for quality education. Queens College, Central Piedmont Community College, and Johnson C. Smith University are some of the top educational institutions in the area.
Charlotte is also home to several high-rated public schools. As a result, the area is a popular place for families to live.
The population of Charlotte grew dramatically during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In 1910, it surpassed Wilmington as the largest city in North Carolina.
