The History of Charlotte North Carolina

Charlotte, North Carolina, is located in the Piedmont region of the state. It is situated at the east end of the Catawba River. The city is also home to several highly rated schools.

In the mid-18th century, the area was settled by European immigrants. In the 1850s, the area was an important crossroads between eastern cities and a railroad network to Columbia.

By the late 1800s, Charlotte’s economy was diverse. Many textile mills based their operations in the area. Others produced wool goods and gunpowder.

In the early twentieth century, Charlotte became a hub for transportation, distribution, and banking. A new branch of the Federal Reserve opened in the city in 1927. This facility helped move currency into circulation.

As the United States entered the Great Depression, Charlotte’s economic growth began to slow. However, the city remained a vital center of wartime industry.

By the late 1920s, Charlotte had become a major recording center. Uncle Dave Macon and Luke Jordan recorded for Victor in the city.

After World War II, Charlotte experienced a boom. New ring of suburbs around the city sprang up. These included blue-collar neighborhoods and middle-class areas.

In the 1950s, Charlotte’s new wealth helped it attract architects and professionals. Many of the first to arrive came from the area’s prosperous cotton and textile industries.

One of the leading architects in Charlotte was C. C. Hook. He designed the Cole Manufacturing factory, one of the nation’s largest. Another was Fred Bonfooy.
