House Republicans will open the second day of the new Congress much like the first — with leader Kevin McCarthy trying to become House speaker despite losing in multiple rounds of voting that threw the new GOP majority into chaos.
It was the first time in 100 years that a nominee for House speaker could not take the gavel on the first vote, but McCarthy appeared undeterred by the gravity of the moment. Instead, he vowed to fight to the finish, encouraged, he said, by former President Donald Trump to end the disarray and pull the Republican Party together.
The House is scheduled to convene Wednesday after the stalemate essentially forced all other business to a standstill, waiting on Republicans to elect a speaker.
“Today, is that the day I wanted to have? No,” McCarthy told reporters late Tuesday at the Capitol after a series of closed-door meetings.
McCarthy said Trump wants him to stay in the race and told him to bring an end to the House Republican chaos and pull the party together.

Charlotte, North Carolina is a city of nearly 800,000 people. It is one of the most diverse cities in the United States. A majority of its population is white, with about 40 percent black. However, it also has a strong presence of Asian and mixed race populations.
During the late nineteenth century, Charlotte was a small, largely plantation economy city. By the time of the Civil War, the city was a major trade and manufacturing center. The city was also a key junction of four railroads.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Charlotte began to attract non-textile industries, including factories producing gunpowder and chemicals. Also, cotton became a large part of the Charlotte economy. Several cotton mills were built, including H. S. Chadwick’s Chadwick Cotton Mill in 1901 and Louise and Elizabeth cotton mills in 1904.
After the war, Charlotte benefited from a post-war prosperity. In the late 20th century, ambitious modernizing programs encouraged growth. Today, Charlotte has become an important location for the energy and technology sectors. Major companies in the area include Duke Energy, Fluor, and AREVA.
Charlotte is also home to several colleges and universities, including Queens University, Johnson C. Smith University, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. These institutions offer degrees in a variety of fields.
Charlotte’s job market is strong in the health care, insurance, and finance fields. Other major employers include Bank of America, Lowe’s, and American Airlines.
Charlotte is located in Mecklenburg County. The surrounding seven counties are Cabarrus, Lancaster, Lincoln, York, Iredell, and Union counties.
