The first United States drought monitor was released on Jan. 5, 2023, and shows little change across the Carolinas — 51% of South Carolina and 44% of North Carolina remain drier-than-normal (D0) which is a precursor to moderate drought.

Additionally, 25% of North Carolina and 11% of South Carolina are under moderate drought conditions (D1) including a large portion of Anson, Richmond, and Chesterfield counties.

You know even though we did see some Rain this week it looks like we could Stand to see some more meteorologist Brittany van Voorhees is standing by to Talk about this latest drought monitor So do we even know exactly how the Latest rainfall has impacted things yeah So Vanessa so these come out Thursday Mornings but they actually stop Collecting data on Tuesday morning so This won't factor in the rain that we Had just yesterday and if you're Watching last night you know Brad Mentioning that it was of course the Wettest day right on record for that day Now the US drought monitor something That comes out weekly right it's Assessment of current drought conditions So we got the latest update today you Can see drier than normal conditions for Parts of both South and North Carolina There's also a little speck there of Moderate drought conditions across our Area this includes Richmond County Chesterfield County as well as parts of Anson County now while drought is often Referred to in conjunction with rain it Is so much more than that the agencies That put together the drought monitor They use precipitation yes but many Other factors like Stream flow Groundwater levels Reservoir levels soil Moisture and even snowpack droughts Filled over time but it also takes time

To get back to normal so let's take a Look at 2022. we were actually pretty Close to normal rainfall wise we ended Slightly higher with about 44.36 inches But remember in 2021 we are almost eight Inches drier than average at the end of The year now it's important to remember That drought is a normal part of the Climate cycle however it's a slow-moving Hazard which often causes people to Underestimate the damage it can do Losses from drought are just as Substantial as those from hurricanes Tornadoes and even other weather Disasters drought can cause loss of Agriculture it can affect the water Supply energy production Public Health Wildlife and even contribute to Wildfires across the country and I mean We've seen that right Vanessa and other Parts of the country like California Over the past few years indeed and You're right in the fact that it's kind Of it's slow moving right like you don't Realize until bang warty in a big Drought and go oh wow there it is Thank you for breaking all that down That's interesting
