Charlotte, North Carolina – Home to a Variety of Attractions and Experiences
Charlotte, North Carolina is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States. It has a population of nearly 700,000. Located in Mecklenburg County and in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, it is home to a variety of attractions and experiences.
Charlotte’s history is shaped by the growth of its industry. A major gold rush in the late 18th century, for example, led to the development of a trading center for the surrounding region. As a result, Charlotte became an important railroad junction. This helped the city become part of a nationwide boom after the Civil War.
Another significant event in Charlotte’s history occurred during the early twentieth century. Edward Dilworth Latta, a descendant of a Mecklenburg County plantation owner, founded the Charlotte Consolidated Construction Company. The company helped build a number of buildings in the city.
At the end of the Civil War, the Charlotte Consolidated Construction Company was a prime agent in Charlotte’s urban development. In fact, the company was later referred to as “The Four Cs.”
In the early 1900s, the state of North Carolina began construction of a state-owned railroad. This railroad connected Charlotte to Greensboro, Salisbury, and Raleigh. This made traveling south to Charleston and east to Columbia easier.
By the late nineteenth century, Charlotte had a population of around 2,200. That’s roughly one-third of the state’s total. With the growth of industries, Charlotte’s population grew even more.
In addition to being an important railroad junction, Charlotte became the location of the Confederate Navy Yard. During the war, the Navy Yard produced munitions. Several factories also manufactured gunpowder.
