Charlotte, North Carolina, is located in the Piedmont region of the state. It has a humid subtropical climate. The city is home to 2.4 million people. In addition to its many attractions, Charlotte has many restaurants, museums and shopping.
Charlotte is the second largest banking center in the United States after New York City. Bank of America has its headquarters in Charlotte. The corporate headquarters of the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association and the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League are also located in the city.
In addition to its banks, Charlotte also has a branch of the Federal Reserve. This facility moved currency into circulation and maintained the cash reserves of the area’s banks.
After the Civil War, Charlotte became a transportation hub. A number of railroads were built into the city. An additional rail line, the Norfolk Southern Railroad, came from Virginia to Charlotte in 1913. These new roads provided a transportation route for Charlotte’s growth as a wholesaling point.
The new highways were vital to Charlotte’s development as a distribution center in the 1920s. By that time, the city had become the largest city in the state.
The post-war boom lasted until the early fifties. During this period, many textile mill owners settled in the area. Many of these mills had offices in Charlotte.
During the late nineteenth century, Charlotte became a hive of activity as its population grew. The city was nicknamed “Hornet’s Nest.”
During this period, Charlotte’s economy centered on cotton. In the early 1900s, three cotton mills were built. One of these mills, the Ada cotton mill, was located at Eleventh and Brevard.
