Charlotte North Carolina – A Brief History
Charlotte, North Carolina is located in the Piedmont region of the state. This region extends from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west to the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The area was already settled over a century before the Civil War.
After the Civil War, Charlotte became a center of textile manufacturing. It also grew into a wholesaling hub for the southeastern U.S. The arrival of the railroad facilitated the growth of the city.
In the 1920s, the city’s distribution center expanded with the arrival of paved highways. New ring of suburbs sprang up around Charlotte. These included blue-collar neighborhoods as well as more middle class areas.
By the end of the decade, the city had surpassed Raleigh and Wilmington in population. Although the United States entered the Great Depression, Charlotte remained untouched by the conflict.
A number of powerful Southern families arrived in Charlotte. Stonewall Jackson’s widow became a leading citizen for several decades.
Many of Charlotte’s early industrialists were bankers or mill owners. Others were architects. Still others were real estate developers.
Charlotte’s post-war boom lasted until the 1960s. It marked a transition from agriculture to a diversified economy. While the city’s banking base continued to grow, new industries were established.
Charlotte is home to the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association. Another team, the Carolina Panthers, is a member of the National Football League. Some of the largest corporations in the world, including Lowe’s, Bank of America and Nucor, are headquartered here.
