Made of Nick Smith Jr or if you just Want to take us another Direction what Was another main takeaway outside of Brandon Miller and uh this past weekend Of games yeah General Okay with Nick Smith Jr I think the play Has been up and down sometimes it feels Like he's playing a little bit too fast Sometimes he slows it down as a little Bit more methodical with his offensive Game I defensively you can see the makings of Someone who can be a good defensive Player moving forward but that's going To be something that grows over time but He's got the motor he's got the Intensity he's got the you know just That thing that you go okay yeah if this If this guy really pays attention then You know he can be a good defensive Player and he has enough I think size uh You know to keep guys away from the Basket and then just in terms of shot Making that's going to be the thing that I think gets him on the floor or keeps Them off the floor early on and you saw Him in this last game against the Lakers Knocked down a couple of deep threes That's what I was waiting on honestly I've seen him make twos he stopped Taking the long twos you know again I Think he listens to the show maybe I'm Just speculating or maybe the coaching Staff was seeing some of the same things
I was I was like hey Nick Smith we don't Do that right inside the line maybe he Just paid attention to one minute of Twitter where an influx of tweets asking Him to stop to either one of those Things could have happened yeah all of The above maybe but he stopped he was Taking three-point shots he knocked a Few down he missed a lot as well so you Know it's just going to be a process for Him but I've been okay with Nick Smith Jr I have two and even a little bit of play Making in a pick and roll situation but The three ball falling in this game Against the Lakers that really helped Now he didn't make one single two-point Field goal he only took three he took Seven threes in this game against the Lakers but against the Spurs um or at Least in the second game I should say The second game I thought he played a Lot better he didn't hit many field Goals against the Spurs he was two of Ten and that one missed all four of his Three-point attempts so really the Second game the second game in the California classic that's the best one From the second pick in this past NBA Draft I know you love Amari Bailey maybe We can split the next two picks up in The next segments if you want to go to Amari Bailey I Can Shed all sorts of Love on James Naji because we're not
Gonna have much more time to do it here It does look like he's going back and Playing with Barcelona for one more Season but let's go with the Mari Bailey Doug I know you like him a lot yeah yeah I mean let's get to that James Nashi Thing because I don't think it's a sure Bet that he's going to Barcelona but There are indications that he may be Heading back but on Amari Bailey just Really quickly he was three of eight in This game against the leg Acres shot Free three free throw attempts nine Points three rebounds two Steals and the Steals are what I want to zero in on Here because he had one that I wrote in Every Hornet's box score he looked like Doc Ock from the Spider-Man comics like His arms just suddenly extend like he's You know I mean he's you know he's got Good like just general defensive posture Arms out sometimes but sometimes like The arm just comes out of nowhere and Just nabs the ball it jumps in the Passing Lane gets out into transition That's super exciting for me because the Hornets need some some more of that you Know from the guard position they need More defensive awareness and he doesn't Gamble a ton either he did I think Either in this Lakers game or Spurs game He did have one particular gamble that I Was like oh that looked very lamello in That led to a layup for the opposing
Team but I think generally he's pretty Disciplined on the defensive end of the Floor and I think that's right now That's his biggest upside because he Stays with plays and so he can miss shot Thoughts follow up his shot and knock Down he's got the athleticism around the Rim you know to to Juke and Jive and get Layups that maybe other players can't But generally his shot looks wonky and I Don't think he's going to be that big of A shot maker early on so defense though Big upside hard not to like what you've Seen from Amari Bailey a lot with him Being the last pick for the Charlotte Hornets and the thing I noticed just my Number one takeaway from him it's the Free throws the guy's attacking a lot How about seven free throws in the first Game only made two but then bounce back Made all five of his free throw attempts In the second game you see what he did Against the Spurs I did have that in Front of me I know that he took only uh Just he took three free throws against The Lakers I think just one or two Against San Antonio that was the weakest Point but you are talking about not a Ton of minutes right this isn't this is Only 16 minutes in the game against the Lakers which I think needs to change by The way we've got two games left I've Seen enough of Bryce McGowan's he's not Starting anymore maybe because he was

Learning how to open doors we get the Thumbs up sign from Walker mail who has Successfully evacuated the dog from the Room and I'm just now getting to James Naji who is your chest now yeah I just I Had to narrate some of that because I Played got it it was so interesting to Me uh you can go back and listen to what I said later but James Naji has I think Opened a few eyes among the fan base Because I don't think that a lot of People knew a ton about James Najee and Then the Hornets all of a sudden they Trade up for this guy who's been playing In your early you've been playing for Barcelona doesn't play the first game of Summer League because they had to uh you Know for some reason had to get fiber Clearance or FIBA clearance or whatever To get this James Naji guy to play it's Ridiculous uh you know it's like no You're drafted at the NBA now now you Play for the NBA come on uh but the Question is has he opened the coaching Staff's eyes enough to retain his Services which would probably cost a Franchise money uh in order to get him Out of that Barcelona contract To bring him over to play for the Swarm Because he's not he does he's not going To play for the big boy team unless There are multiple injuries of the Center position and according uh to this Article that I found from eurohoops.net
He was interviewed uh by someone from Mundo deportivo and James Naji said Essentially that he expects to go back To Barcelona for one more year that Unless something changes within the Summer league period uh that he's most Likely heading back to Barcelona how now I know you're a big James Naji fan Walker does this make you very sad Um it does a little bit to be honest With you and yes I I have I I liked what I saw a pre-draft and of course in Summer league I've only seen stuff to Make me fall in love more so with what James Naji can bring defensively yeah Doug I I don't think there's any problem I don't think there's any lack of Discipline with him right now like when We talk about him being this raw project Of an MBA Prospect that's solely on the Offensive end which it is one 100 clear He's Raw on that end of the floor he's Setting screens he's diving and and Offensive crashing and that's about it Defensively he covers so much ground There were times where he was guarding Two guys where he has to leave the big Man there's somebody driving Baseline And he has to take care of ball on the Baseline and he has to take care of a Big guy in the post and he makes a bad Decision happen because he's doing both Responsibilities extremely well he's BL He blocked Colin Castleton a couple
Times we saw him play straight up with Wimby couldn't get by him but it was a Great pass I just think defensively I Think right now Doug defensively he's Better than Nick Richards even with some Of the rim protection numbers now I Don't know if that means that he should Play over Nick Richards because Offensively I think you have better Stuff with Nick right now but I do think Defensively especially out there on the Perimeter I think right now he's better And you've seen him improve right like From game to game in some League you've Seen him come over not be allowed to Play in game one because of FIBA Regulations game two he shows you a Flash or two game three game four boom This is somebody that's already helping Out in a lot of way so you know just on A possession basis yeah he's probably Better defensively than Nick Richards But Fitness wise you know he's got to Work some stuff out he's looking winded Out there Rob Boone reported on it as Well that is something that I've noticed That ever since he started playing like Long stretches look Euro basketball is Not in terms of how much guys run and The fitness level required to play NBA Basketball it's just a universal way From Euro league basketball the speed of The game just ramps up tremendously even College guys have a tough time adjusting
To it sometimes so you know he's got to Figure that out but also as Naji even Notes in this interview he says they Want to look at more options the Charlotte Hornets have not told me that I'm the first have not told me that I'm The first but anything can happen as I've said there are other issues like The team's cap space and they have a Full roster they want to wait for a Better situation that's why they talk to Me uh for about a year so You know I think that's the situation Too right If This Were A Hornets team That had a ton of roster spots that that Didn't just draft four guys in the draft And have drafted multiple players for a Couple of years now I think it would be A situation where you go easy play you Know play nausea and uh in in the G in The G league but I think draft and stash Makes more sense for Naji right now Until the roster opens up a little bit Yeah it probably is better for Naji to Go back and even with the Nick Richards Stuff what I've seen in summer league Against players that aren't rotation Players I've seen better stuff right now Like I I think he's better right now but Also you got to get past Kai Jones too And I saw NADA put this out there like Yeah this is the best news for Kai Jones That Naji is going back to Barcelona Because that is that is not a big gap
It's what we talked about you draft some Raw Prospect and Kai which everybody Knew that right everybody knew you just Had to figure out what he was going to Be and then Naji who was considered Something raw unfinished offensively for Sure defensively yeah I think now people You've seen a lot of people really like What he does on that end but the Gap is Not big there and so with Kai Jones yeah That's that's the the guy that benefits From this quite a bit in my opinion you Yeah I mean bottom line naji's exciting For the future but if they're serious About making the playoffs next season Then I think you just roll with your two Bigs and then if something happens to One of those bigs then you go find you Know somebody that's a cheaper option Um you know that's a veteran that knows What they're doing like if you're Serious about making the playoffs you Don't depend on yeah If one of these guys gets hurt I mean I Think that's bottom line totally fair All right let's move on coming up next On the lockdown Hornets podcast Let's talk lamelo ball contract details Saw some of those come out over the last Couple of days we'll get to that in the Last segment there's the puppy barking Again on lockdown Hornets So Walker we know that lamello is locked Up into a Max contract could be worth
260 million dollars if he reaches you Know all NBA MVP material I don't know If you saw the video of him signing the Contract it was like a lot of videos That are produced In-house by not just the Charlotte Hornets but by really any NBA team I Think any interactions between players And management end up being like weirdly Awkward like you had the handshake you Had uh Mitch cup check being like oh Lamella are you gonna make you make all MVP are you gonna make MVP you're gonna Make all NBA and Mel's like yeah sure I Guess Dad whatever let me just give me The contract get the money So anyway uh we got some details from Michael Scotto on Twitter uh lamelo Ball's five-year designated rookie Max Extension worth up to 260 million Includes no player option and has a 15 Trade kicker yeah now what does that Mean Walker well it means that it's Going to be harder and there's less Incentive to trade lamello ball and These other teams it'll be it'll be most Likely the fact that unless he Demands a Trade that there's not going to be it's Going to be just less likely that he's Going to go to another team you know now Look this is the thing right Ultimately if lamelo decides that he Wants out so badly then it's going to Happen that's just the way that we've
Seen Stars operate if they won out then He's going to find himself to another Franchise whatever he wants to play for If he wants to try to do the Dame Lillard thing and then say I only want To go to this organization most people Would point out La then maybe that could Happen but yes it is the fact that you Do have lamelo pretty locked in here for A while and so that'll be great for Charlotte Hornets fans that want lamello Their star to be with this organization Yeah for sure the no player option means That if we get laid into this process it Will be up to the team whether they want To you know move forward as opposed to The player you know the player will have More control if they have that player Option in the final year they could walk Uh and it means you as a franchise you Get to worry about things later there's There's a period of time that you would Have to worry about it if they have a Player option that now gets essentially Moved one year into the future so that's Positive for the franchise uh and it's Positive for lamello and that if the Hornets do trade him uh he gets a 15 Percent bump in pay that's always nice That to me that's actually bad for the Hornets because I think it would it Would suppress the uh the amount that You would get back in a trade Potentially if a team knows that they're
Going to have to take that 15 trade Kicker it means what's coming back to The franchise is potentially less than If you had a clean sheet going to the Other team so that's that's bad but at The same time it could also lock up the Trade market for lamello ball in the Future a lot of ifs a lot of things that Have to happen a lot of assumptions to Make but I think you can take both of These things and go hey it makes it more Difficult to trade lamello or for Lamello not to I mean he could ask for a Trade whenever he wanted to but the no Player option thing means that the Franchise will have more control over The situation well and look at lamelo I Don't have any problem with him being Worth his contract the Hornets didn't Either they got this thing done no Questions asked and it's going to be Worth the most that it possibly could if He makes an all-nba team right but the Trade kicker it's it's if he doesn't Perform up to expectations which no one Really expects up to expectations right But if that doesn't happen then yeah you Are working from a disadvantageous spot Trying to send him out to a different Franchise and then trying to bring Somebody else and try whatever your Return is you're right so if you are Lamelo fan then it does not lock him in Again with the hole if he decides to
Demand to trade but yeah it's not great For the Hornets it's not the biggest Deal in the world but I will say this If he wanted the trade kicker and he's Pounding the table for the trade kicker That's not anything that the Hornets Need to play hardball with they just get Okay fine right like if I get traded Then I get a boost in salary though and It's like okay we don't plan on trading Maybe they exchanged it for the player Options so it's like look we maybe no Player option and you get the 15 tray Kicker and that I think the you know the Hornets will take that no yeah again Franchises want especially in this era Where players as we're seeing with Damian Lillard seem to have all of the Cards in their hand Um any little bit of Leverage that a Team can have in those situations uh They're they're going to try to wrestle Away and so you get the no player option Here but again I think a lot of this so Many things have to happen for uh this To turn out poorly Um that I think it's you know it is it Is strange to look at these things and Go oh well you know the Hornets won this Or lamello won this look if lamelo plays It doesn't because if lamelo plays up to All NBA or MVP level the 15 trade kicker Doesn't mean anything if he wants to go Somewhere else a team like Miami or LA
Or New York is going to be like that's Fine 15 just bring him he's all in Between right right exactly all right That'll do it for luck before we before We go really quickly uh poor we got Because I got it on the graphic Portland Uh they play Portland tonight No scoot Henderson oh that's right yes I Forgot to get to this yes we talked About Portland I guess a little while Ago but you're right no scoot Henderson This was dicey because we did think no SCU we know that scoot was gonna miss The second game of their summer league Session this one was still up in the air But he's not been shut down right has he Been shut down for the rest of Summer League okay he is not he's just declared Out for this game so it looks like Portland's holding out hope that they'll Because I I think Portland like like San Antonio wanted to see two games out of Victor you know I think I think these Teams don't want these star players to Play the entire summer league but they Like two looks at them so I think maybe They're holding out hope if I were Portland I'd say shut it down like you Know you don't take a chance if there's Any chance of him getting re-injuring That shoulder you know I think it would Be silly to play him but I think this is Bad for Brandon Miller because we saw Brandon Miller rise to the challenge of
That Victor webignyama Spotlight so I Think you know this Brandon Miller is Not going to have quite as much Motivation to come out here here and Show everything he's got against scoot Henderson you know I don't think that Necessarily means he's going to play Poorly uh and and boy does he I mean he Needs a game you know I think you know These last two games if they plan to Play Brandon Miller like I I think he Just needs one of these Summer League Games to be eye-popping just for his own Confidence I don't think fans really Fans would enjoy seeing it I don't think They need to see it summer league Ultimately doesn't matter in the grand Scheme of things but I think just for His confidence it would be nice if he Could go out and drop you know 25 on a Fish and shooting and lots of Three-pointers yeah it'd be it'd be nice To see a takeover game because right now What's happening is there's a lot of There's not it's roster construction It's the lack of a true point guard he's Going to be fine the shot's not falling And that's the real reason for the zero You know the non-big numbers and then Once the shot Falls it'll come around And all of that's valid by the way it's The coaching we had a whole episode Dedicated to how bad the coaching has Been how bad the roster construction's
Been but that has been the analysis Surrounding Brandon right good stuff We've seen the defensive flashes we've Seen the play making we've seen some Flashes of scoring and getting to the Rim but the percentages just aren't good It doesn't matter how you want to slice It Rim percentage not good three point Percentage not good overall physical Percentage not good now context matters Here big time because a lot of that is Contributing to him not performing at The highest level that you did see with Some of these other players that have Been in the summer league session but You would like the Takeover game saying Screw all that context I'm going to be a Beast because I'm the number two overall Pick and this is who I am you would like That to show itself before we get out of Summer League doesn't mean it's an Indictment honest future if he doesn't Give you that but it would still be nice To see it for Brandon and for the Hornets fan basic well totally and all Of that is up to Brandon right I mean This needs to be I think he needs one Game or the coaching staff says all Right we're going to run most of this Offense through Brandon because there Have been possessions in the last game Where he was sort of like begging the Guard whether it was book night or Nick Smith Jr or whoever to give him the
Basketball and let him initiate the Offense and they wouldn't do it and so I Think there has to be one game where Everybody gets on the same page about Like all right we're going to see what Brandon can do initiating the offense Here because the thing is we want to see That because we want to see that he has That desire for later on in his career Because it is rookie season we're not Going to get to see that many Opportunities for him to initiate the Offense it's just not going to happen But you'd like to see it in this period Just because you go okay yes he has that In him he wants that he's going to work Towards that you know year two year Three year four uh so yeah well I want To see that as well uh disappointing That we won't get to see scoot versus Brandon Miller because I think it would Have been exciting but Portland had a Lot of draft picks that I really really Like so this will be a fun game and I'll Be covering it on every Hornets box Score Walker will be talking about it on WFNZ and we're going to be back here Tomorrow uh to go over it all uh with With puppies maybe without puppies I Don't know you'll just have to come back And see yeah I mean I think there will Be a puppy I think there will be Somebody in the house taking care of the Puppy so it's not barking
