Johnny Hekker talks about specialists

Hekker discussed the specialists’ bond and how that chemistry helps them in the season.

Honey Um were you the emergency quarterback in LA Um yes it kind of depended on on the Coordinator there was a few times I had A small playbook in St Louis a few runs A few play passes a few drawbacks Um and then yeah a few places I've been If they don't have someone that's Capable of kind of maintaining a wildcat Type of you know game plan to finish a Game then they'll give me some stuff so Um Something I think I'm glad the rules Have changed and I don't have to worry About rifle through plays the last Minute like I did in La last season so Um Because Obviously Thomas Brown comes here I know You're obviously spending a lot of time On special teams I was wondering if you You guys had a lot of interactions when You guys were together in LA and and if How he how you've been able to observe His coaching yeah Thomas is a great guy We had a lot of interactions never him As an offensive coach to me think Thankfully but Thomas is a great leader Sean did a great job of delegating a lot Of responsibilities to Thomas when he Was our assistant OC running backs coach He moved had a bunch of hats on that Offense but Thomas is a great guy hard

Worker great communicator and um Very very excited to have him kind of Working with Frank and kind of a melding Of the minds there with both their Philosophies offensively I think he'll Be a nice uptick for our team Well I guess another question that I Have Tell me about the uh The Atrium uh uh You know game you guys play The Specialist the you Eddie always seem to Have like like a specialist Olympics on The side what what's that all about Um it is passing time effectively um you Know we're we're competitive beings at Heart and so as Specialists we have you Know kind of a finite time we can be of Of use during practice we get our kicks In get our drill work in and then we Have some some time to kill and so we Like to compete have fun for pride and Eddie likes to throw the ball up onto The the indoor and let it kind of run Run down He says it's 50 50 but he wins about 90 Of those tosses I'm not sure how to how He keeps doing that but he's got a Secret that he's not telling but we'll We'll try and wear them down and get That more to real 50 50. well what's the Goal a lot of yesterday I think we Know Yeah The placement on the Dome or like the

Roll or what the rules are Ever Changing Uh you know so whoever whoever wins the The task before gets to set the Parameters for the next game so let's Say me and you were rolling a ball to That back camera we'd both roll a ball To the back camera whoever came closer Will then make the next game so Eddie Loves you throw it up on the Dome then Whoever gets to bring it furthest back Away from the Dome it usually wins that One have you ever pranked each other With like a game like hey let's play Duck duck goose today or something like That They're giving me some great ideas yeah Those are those that's a great idea Um no no no made up games we take it Very seriously you know we are committed To the craft It's kind of in anticipating the season But also just kind of keeping everyone Together what it was that like for y'all All three Um I think it's wildly important to our Success as a unit you know I think with Any with any group that kind of works Together on a football team you know you Have the o-line group of receivers and Quarterback cohesion is is going to help You a lot as far as you know knowing Each other what they what they need to Be effective you know Through practice and in a game kind of

What their game day rhythms are the more The better you know a person the more You can be an asset to them and helping Them produce their best so I think Having JJ and Eddie you know and me have Some cohesion from all last season Together getting to be back together Again it means a lot I love those guys They are like we're like a little family Dysfunctional at times but a family Nonetheless and makes coming to work a Joy every day It's far enough far enough for a little Comeback on a fake punt yep okay yeah Absolutely not I wish that'd be sweet I'd be playing something else though how Cool has it been to see Thomas Brown get An opportunity to call plays here in the Preseason it's been great you know Thomas is a guy that every every Interaction I've had with him he is he Is very Um intended on getting better you know Whether it's we're talking about how our Families are doing he's he has an intent Behind the conversation he wants to know How I'm doing he wants to invest in me As a person and I think that that intent First mindset and intentionality behind What he does carries over to how he Coaches as a offensive coordinator and So I'm hoping that you know as we start To expand on play calls and stuff that We can do complexity-wise you know you

Don't want to show too much into Preseason but Um just his his command his his um you Know level-headedness I think will Attribute itself well to offensive Success There's not a new rule at the emergency Quarterback do you think that the NFL Should maybe do something with like Specialists Because of You know guys may Not be able to if you have a punter that Goes down in the pre in the pre-aim OR Particularly Zang did a couple years ago Yeah does that make sense Yeah yeah I mean I think it just it Makes the guys that are there have to be A little bit more well-rounded Um I've had to kick in a few games and I Kind of enjoy that role granted my Growing is usually a little sore the Next few days after but it is it's a fun Deal to kind of Step In expectations go Out the window and you just go out there And try and do your best but Um it would be it would be fun to be Able to carry extra Specialists and Maybe have somebody up on game day but Um I kind of like we're a tattoo JJ got Hurt free game could you well I guess You wouldn't be but couldn't right could Eddie or somebody do it Eddie could not No Eddie is a terrible Snapper with all Due respect to Eddie um He's more of a foot based athlete

Emergency Long Snapper maybe an Alignment I think right now kamu is Working on it he's got some real talent Um great block or two great athlete down The field so Um Yeah calm is the man also piggybacking Off kamu guy from Hawaii I just want to Send our thoughts and prayers to people In Maui um I've I've vacation in Lahaina A few times and so as someone that's Witnessed the natural beauty of the Islands um you know we're taking it back By the by the loss of the wildfires There and the people of the Hawaiian Islands deserve Um a lot of Aid immediately and we hope To be a part of that with I think kamu's Got some some Wheels on the ground Things we're going to do from our Organizational standpoint so he's Working with Kevin Winston and a few Other guys to get something moving so There's people of Hawaii we love you Thinking about you and Um wishing you all the best Cool thanks guys appreciate it yeah
