Ejiro Evero: It’s going to be a great challenge

Evero talks being game-plan specific and feeling confident in the foundation the defense has built heading into Week 1.

This group has mostly veterans um I know You're coming in and installing a new System why was it so important to get Veterans in every single important spot On the on the Roster um well you know there's at the End of the day even though it's a new System for the guys here um I think There's a lot of carryover in the NFL um Especially with the veteran guys and so I don't think you could ever replicate That um and so I just think it's always Better to you know obviously you want to Have talented players that's always the First and foremost um but it's important To have guys that have experienced the NFL um they understand not only Defensive football but offensive Football they know how to prepare um They know how to approach the game and So you know we think that's a big deal Were there specific things you did to This defense after you got here and got To know guys where it's like okay he's Really good at this I want to do more of That kind of thing yeah I mean that's Always the the the focus it's uh you Know you look at the guys you have and You try to put them in the best position To be successful and um um that's why I'm such an advocate it's not about any System it's about hey you first start Off with your players what do your Players do well make fit them into that

Mold and play from there how did Brian Burns look in practice yesterday and are You preparing as though he's going to Play on Sunday uh he looked great and uh You know we'll just take that day by day Even in building chemistry is your going Through the preseason and balancing how Much you want to play your core guys Together versus building that for the Regular season opener what was your Approach in that strategy um combination It's a it's a approach of you know you Want guys to work be able to work Together communicate with each other and All that stuff and uh also developing Individuals you know and so um we try to Take that blend um CU you know the Nature of the Beast is that sometimes uh Availability is not always you know it's In question so we have to be able to um Have guys that are used to working with Each other but also have guys that um You know can feel in what have you seen From Justin Houston in this couple um First couple weeks here here oh he's a Stud yeah he's a stud he's uh um he's a Professional first of all um he knows How to uh come in and work every day do The work take care of his body study um Great in meetings great on the field He's another coach on the field Essentially um he's been great and uh he Still has a lot of ability left in his Body I know we haven't been able to

Sorry has he uh been mentoring the rest Of the p p mentoring the uh The Edge Guys mentoring everybody mentoring me so You know it's been great I I know we Haven't gotten to talk to a lot but that Nose tackle position has been a been a Topic for us um you had a lot of Movement there why is why does Shai fit There right now well you know we're We're always F looking for the best Combinations um I would say this that You know the nose is important but so Are the ends and so is everybody and um You know our interior three guys Specifically you know we're not really Asking them to play any different so We're not really asking the nose to play Dramatically different than our ends um A lot of the techniques carry over over And uh you know at the end of the day You want guys that are versatile because When you get into a game when you get Into a game plan with your substitution Patterns um you don't want to be limited By guys that could only play one spot With Thurman and Ray I mean not a lot of People have familiarity with them Relative to your starters in that group What have they shown you throughout the Preseason that kind of made you Comfortable going into a year with those Two uh theyve done a great job uh They've gotten better um you know it's Kind of fortunate and uh you know

Unprecedented find guys at that that Late that uh you know make the team and Are going to be big time contributors And uh they've done a great job of coach Was has done a great job with them and Uh they've gotten better and better uh They're uh they play the way we want to Play they stay Square they hit blocks um And uh their football Acumen has Contined to grow within our system and So um we're excited about it you Mentioned coming in late I mean how long Did it take for you to kind of watch Practice and say all right we might have Something here well I think you know Scott and his staff does a great job of Of constantly looking at the roster and Seeing where we could get better at and Improve and um um you know and that's The NFL right it's like I don't think Anybody could ever get comfortable we Always have to produce myself included On a daily basis and um I think um our Staff does a great job of having a good Feel of the landscape of the league and Where we can improve I know Atlanta has Is is expected to have a run heavy Offense what are you seeing from them as You're looking at tape yeah um you I First of all I think uh the coach is Outstanding I think they have a very Challenging scheme uh they got good Players all over the place um obviously We know they're going to run the ball

All everything says that um but they've Got really good skilled players and uh The quarterback I think has done a Really good job as a seconde player Continuing to grow so it's going to be a Great challenge team kind of features Like big people beat up little people Sort of mindset um but you guys also Have guys with length and size and speed How important was that element of you Know adding guys to the roster who had Those trades yeah I mean I we we're There's certain prototypes that we're Looking for at each position and um you Know I think again like compliment Scott And uh all those guys they've done a Great job of addressing a lot of those Deals and um um we feel good about our Roster we feel good about um our players And uh we can't wait to get started with Them how do you feel about Atlanta Listing a joker position for Patterson I Haven't paid attention to that to be Honest with you so I'm just uh you know I'm not looking too much into that I'm Just watching the film Frank was sort of Laughing the other day somebody said Didn't have a good sense for what the Defense was GNA be about this year Because say that say that one more time Please I'm sorry Frank last week said That U somebody asked that we don't know What the defense is going to look like Because so many of the guys didn't play

A lot in the preseason and Frank sort of Laughed and said good yeah was it kind Of was it almost frustrating though when You're trying to put in something new That you don't have that familiarity in A Game um I don't think so you know um You're developing techniques and skills And fundamental and training camp and uh You know once you get to the game uh the Regular season I should say U so much of It is game plan specific and um I feel Really really good about the foundation That we built in the offseason and in Training camp and um you know at the end Of the day you got to go play football And uh I feel like we're in a good Position to do that so how much of that Was also trying to have the element of Surprise when you're going against your Opposition especially opening with two Division opponents yeah that's obviously Um not obviously but that's a big part Of it um I think um you know we're Really in the evaluation mode when we're In training camp and uh in preseason Games and so we're not um really I'm not That focused in on scheme I know Coach Frank is the same way and uh we're Really about evaluating our player and Our roster and seeing where we're good Where we need to improve um and uh then Obviously when we get to this point we Need to go win games and so that's the

Forefront I me add Justin Houston into That group having that veteran guy out There who's done it oh great I mean I Mean it's uh You know when you have a guy like that It's so much more powerful than a coach Because um he's done it for such a long Time he's done it at such a high level And uh when you have a guy that can give You know young guys etor and uh and DJ Some you know coaching Point some Tidbits it goes a long long a lot Farther I should say speak of Patterson How difficult is that to game plan for I Mean just a guy that can do so many Things yeah I mean they got a couple of Them you know Patterson uh the young kid From um young man I should say from Texas um you know aler is a really good Back uh you know they got good receivers Pits it fits in a diff a bunch of Different molds and so they've got a Bunch of guys that can do a lot of Different things so it's going to be a Good challenge last year you got a lot Out of your inside linebackers uh Particularly Alex Singleton why do you Think that they fit so well I know you Don't want to talk about scheme but into Your evaluation process and what Pete's Able to get out of them well yeah Pete's Phenomenal he's a great teacher um he Really understands that position on how To to teach it and you know he did a

Great job last year obviously and uh you Know we were very fortunate to be able To come here and uh you know adopt a new Group that it's you know they've been Very very productive and they've done a Great job and um you know especially With Shaq and even to a certain extent With um with us uh we're dealing with Guys that have played for a long time And have a lot of experience and um you Know we're going to you know try to help Them and put them in the best positions But we're also learning a lot from them Too so you designed as defense so that Guys can be more responsive and play Freer how does that help you against an Opponent this week uh which is one of The most discipline offenses yeah no It's uh it's it's helpful because you Know they have way more experience with Playing against the Falcons than I do um I haven't played against them in a Couple of years um and haven't played Against them since Arthur Smith has been Here so um uh it's been good to uh get Their feedback and uh um you know a lot Of the barriers that you break down when You don't really know an oppon opponent In terms of like What routes guys like to run how did Certain guys block and stuff like that These guys have a lot of uh knowledge on That so it's been Good's Brown's role Changing from what he was in that 43 to

This 34 and and how is He adjusted oh Derrick's done a great job um he's um He's playing at a high level right now Um we're excited to see what he's going To do this year and um you know he's a Talented player I mean there's no doubt About that and uh we're not going to ask Him to do anything you know different Really than what he been in the past um You know it's uh you know different Position names but a lot of the same in Terms of the techniques they're playing And the push you get so that cuz he got That even when he was playing into 43 Everybody said he's not getting sacks But the fact he's getting that push it's Going to free up I guess you're in so I Mean how big of a value is that oh yeah No we we need to get Rush from Everywhere you know and part of that is Pocket push getting your hands up bad at Balls all those things and uh so it's Really Important we all good all right thank You all
