Charlotte North Carolina – The Queen City
Events, Life, Sports, Weather, News
Charlotte is one of America’s most popular and rapidly growing cities. Its culture is eclectic and diverse, with a mix of old-school southern charm and hipster flair. You can find Americana ice cream parlors next to trendy coffee shops, and traditional southern BBQ beside high-end sushi restaurants. The city center divides into four wards, with the heart of downtown featuring a bustling Public Market, the Spectrum Center (home to the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets), and museums. In the outskirts, you’ll discover Victorian houses on quiet tree-lined streets.
In the business world, Charlotte is the banking capital of the US, with Wells Fargo and Bank of America calling the Queen City home. The banking industry is also responsible for much of the local economy, along with automotive manufacturing and insurance. Other top employers include Lowe’s and American Airlines. Charlotte also boasts a thriving healthcare scene, with nationally ranked providers like Carolinas Healthcare System and Novant Health.
The city’s name and mascot are tied to the hornet, after British General Charles Cornwallis mistook the local rebellious population for a horde of stinging insects when he marched through the town in 1780. The ties to the hornet have never been cut, and the symbol can be seen on everything from police cars to the city’s newest skyscraper.
Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, you’ll find plenty of green space, with 230 parks on 12,000 acres, plus 56 miles of trails. You can go hiking or biking, and take in the stunning fall foliage, or visit the Discovery Place (a STEM-focused hands-on museum) or the Charlotte Ballet.
