When you move to Charlotte North Carolina, be prepared for a diverse culture that celebrates all cultures, including many different religions. Craft brewing is big here, and enjoying a cold one at a brewery or beer garden is a popular pastime. On the other hand, there are plenty of people who still go to church on Sunday morning.
The city also hosts the nation’s third largest Pride festival, which brings in an array of entertainment and activities. There are also several arts and cultural museums and institutions, such as the Mint Museum of Contemporary Art and the Discovery Place hands-on learning museum. Families love the Carowinds amusement park and other recreational choices like US National Whitewater Center and Lake Wylie.
For work, Charlotte is home to six Fortune 500 companies, including Bank of America, Lowe’s, Duke Energy, Sonic Automotive, and Nucor. Many jobs can be found in the downtown area, which is called Uptown, as well as the surrounding suburbs.
Although public transportation options do exist, Charlotte is considered a car-centric city and most residents will want their own vehicle. The city’s transit system is known as the CATS, and it includes buses and a LYNX light rail that covers the I-485 loop. The cost of living in Charlotte is lower than the national average, but its taxes are fairly high. Residents pay a 4.75% sales tax and a flat income tax rate.
