At first, North Mecklenburg High School student Kayla ‘Kal’ Wuor wasn’t sure if an internship with the City of Charlotte would be a good fit for her filmmaker ambitions. But after spending weeks imbedded with the Charlotte Communications & Marketing studio team, she’s learned valuable career lessons and hopes to one day become an ambassador for future interns following her footsteps.
In this edition of Behind the Crown, Wuor talks about her experience as a Mayor’s Youth Employment Program (MYEP) intern.
In the MYEP, participants explore careers, hone skills, and gain exposure to models of professionalism, creating pathways to attainable career goals. Learn more:

We kind of forget a lot of times that Even though we are children we still can Have a positive impact on our community Even if you don't enter even if you Don't want to go into the workforce Early still do something with your time That's worth it in the end [Music] My name is Kayla war and I'm a my up Intern for the city of Charlotte Maya is The mayor's Youth Employment Program it Basically takes people in high school And allows them to work for an Internship during the summer for not Just a city but for other companies that Work with the city I put in my request For the interest that I had and my main Interest was film and video and Photography So based on those I was part Of someone who could show me like things In that interest the most surprising Part was actually the first day because I honestly wasn't going to take the Internship because I knew that working With City Charlotte technically got paid Less and I was already hesitant about Working for the government because how's The government going to help me to film Those two don't typically go together But as soon as I walked in I saw this Whole studio I was like I was maybe a Bit wrong maybe just a little bit Confused and as I've gotten more and More into it as the days have gone on I
Realized that hey this actually is kind Of what I want to do so being here doing Work is something I'm used to but doing Work that I actually like doing that's What really makes me happy about this Internship and even though I have work Here that confuses me and I don't know How to do it I'm more willing to figure Out how to do it because something that I want to know how to do I'm I think one Of my greatest like positives about it Is the fact that I haven't been treated Like a child because I'm I am used to Being in places and except because I'm Technically not an adult I'm treated Like I'm five years old so I've liked Being able to actually work with people That see me as a fellow co-worker and Not just child helping us move some People like myself have no choice but to Go to college so I think the one I guess Key benefit of taking an internship over Doing any other thing over the summer is That no matter where you want to no Matter what you want to do in life an Internship can still help you the Marriage Youth Employment Program is Definitely something that should be here It's something that's needed for a lot Of kids because a lot of my friends Don't know what they're going to do in Life simple put so having an opportunity To to I guess in a sense waste time During the summer to get paid which is
Kind of what lured me in honestly that's What literally in I didn't because There's a lot of Summer opportunities But summer opportunity and I'm paid for It amazing phenomenal the mayor should Keep doing it I mean I would endorse it I want to be a my Ambassador so I honestly think this program is Definitely needed after actually being Here and interning it's like yeah this Is actually something that's worth my Time and I will think about for years to Come
Moving to Charlotte North Carolina
Events, Life, Sports, Weather, News
With a thriving culture of arts and entertainment, Charlotte offers up a lot to do and see. It’s a city that embraces diversity and has a distinctly progressive attitude that you can’t help but notice right away when you move here.
The banking industry is a large part of the economy with Bank of America and Wells Fargo calling the Queen City home. It also birthed NASCAR and is the 2nd largest stock car racing center in the US. Other major industries include healthcare, which is a top employer in Charlotte with Novant Health and Carolinas Healthcare System leading the way, and automotive manufacturing.
Getting outdoors is easy in Charlotte as there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Lake Norman, Lake Wylie, and the Catawba River are great spots to go boating or spend a day at the beach with friends. The temperate climate is also ideal for hosting great outdoor festivals and events in the area, with niche festival and concert opportunities popping up all year round.
It’s no secret that Charlotte is a big sports town with the NBA Charlotte Hornets and NFL Carolina Panthers playing in Bojangles Coliseum (owned by the famous fried chicken chain, of course). There’s also a big basketball presence, including the Charlotte Hornets, and a solid baseball scene as well. If you are a sports fan then moving to Charlotte is the perfect choice for you.
