The Charlotte area was settled by European colonists as early as 1755. Thomas Spratt, a great-uncle of U.S. President James K. Polk, settled near the Elizabeth neighborhood and built a house near the intersection of two Native American trading paths. One of them ran north-south along the Great Wagon Road while the other ran east-west on Trade Street. The area soon gained its nickname Queen City.

Regardless of your interests, you’re sure to find something in Charlotte that will keep you busy. The city’s rich history as a center for college sports is evident. The Carolina Panthers of the National Football League play here, as do the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA. Charlotte is also the NASCAR epicenter, and it has a NASCAR Hall of Fame. The city is also known for its historic architecture, including Craftsman-style cottages and historic homes.

Winters in Charlotte can be fairly mild, with low temperatures in the teens and 20s in January and June, and up to eighty degrees in July and August. Residents can get away with wearing only a long-sleeved shirt and a light sweater.
