During the Civil War, Charlotte was a major Confederate city, where Confederate iron was manufactured. The Confederate government held its final cabinet meeting here. In addition, the city was the seat of the Southern Presbyterianism movement.

Charlotte is a growing, cosmopolitan city that is home to many influential and powerful Southern families. The population is made up of approximately 48 percent white and 35 percent black, with the remainder made up of various races and cultures.
