History of Charlotte North Carolina

Charlotte, North Carolina is located in the Piedmont region. The region stretches from Virginia to Georgia, with rolling hills and a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. It is an excellent location for industry.

After the Civil War, Charlotte became an important center for industry. Textiles remained the major economic focus, although other industries began to take hold. In the late 19th century, cotton mills converted from steam engines to electric power. This furthered Charlotte’s status as the center of the Piedmont textile manufacturing industry.

By the early 20th century, Charlotte was a thriving wholesale center. New highways in the 1920s helped the city grow into a major distribution center. Retailing was also expanding.

The city’s population increased tremendously in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As an urban area, it became a popular destination for families.

Charlotte’s growth also was fueled by the gold rush. Gold was discovered in the region and was brought into the city to be smelted. Some of the era’s richest mines were less than two miles from the town square.

The discovery of gold in Charlotte lifted the economy out of its plantation base. Charlotte became the trade center of the country’s first gold production area.

Charlotte also became a center of wartime manufacturing. During the closing months of the war, over 1,300 refugees flooded the city. Confederacy machinery was moved to the city, and the Confederacy’s Naval Yard was located here.

As in many cities in the United States, Charlotte experienced a mild postwar depression. However, it felt more intense than the 1870s depression.
