Wow. Alright, some changes, changes underway. I guess the question are we gonna see Some changes in the way we saw a lot Of rain today? Oh, that was a lot. Yeah, a lot of rain feels like spring, Not so much early January, but today Is an important date on the calendar. It's called perihelion day. You probably remember Last July if you watched, I was talking about Apple Healing Day, Which is basically the opposite of the orbit Around the sun is not a perfect circle, It's elliptical, so it's an Oval. So what happens is in January we have The closest distance to the sun. In our orbit around it at 91.4 million miles. So believe it or not, today, Even though it's the middle of the winter, The coldest time of the year In the northern hemisphere, It's actually the closest we are the sun. The reason doesn't affect our temperature Much because the northern hemisphere is Tilted away because of that tilt of the year. 23 1/2 degrees keeps us cool This time of year. That was this morning. That happened the same time we Saw the big storms move through. Now we're seeing drier weather movement. The cold front, I can barely detect it, But I can see some showers and a

Line of clouds along the front. It's really a line of drier. And warmer air ahead of it. And I say drier and cooler air behind it. I said drier. Warmer air is kind of pushing out Of the area. There's the cooler air behind it and You'll notice that you'll start to Feel it here in the next 24 hours. But what a wild ride. Go back to next week. I mean, this is just crazy to think about. You know, At the end of December, We had temperatures in the 20s and Single digits for morning lows. And then we flipped the calendar Really towards New Year's Eve. We started climbing and now we've seen Temperatures about 20 degrees above average. In fact, we're off to the warmest First four days of January. On record here in the Charlotte area, That's how warm it's been. The start to New Year, The cold fronts pushing through, It'll basically feel the same tomorrow, But just a little bit drier. Starts to cool off for Friday and Saturday is another fast moving System approaches with some showers Possible for parts of the area. But the Thunder this morning,

A lot of folks commented how loud it was. This is kind of typical in the winter Time when we have a temperature Inversion around 5000 feet was actually Warmer than it was down near the surface. So what happens when we get these Thunderstorms this time of year? The Thunder kinds of bounces around. Echoes between that inversion and the ground. We call that atmospheric ducting. And so it makes the Thunder sound louder, Last longer and travel further distances. So that long rumbling that you Heard was because of the setup In the atmosphere today. But also when we see Thunder in the winter. The first question I'll get When are we going to See Snow? Because the old wives Tale here in the Carolinas, Thunder in the winter meant snow in 10 days. The problem is data doesn't Really support that. I went back to the winter of 2011 and 12 I counted every day that Thunder was Reported at Charlotte Douglas International. And looked for any snow at all within 10 Days and guess what the results were? It doesn't happen very often. In fact, 72 times we had Thunder In the winter since 2011. Only eight times did we get Snow within 10 days. Happened twice last year,

But we ended up with nine days with Thunder. So even last year didn't work out very well. But it kind of makes sense when You think about big fronts. This time of year typically mean you're Going to see cooler temperatures and we Are going to see slightly cooler air. But as we learned in December, Just because it's cold doesn't Mean it's going to snow. And right now it just looks like Maybe near average temperatures As we go into the weekend. Early next week, But keeping an eye on potentially Maybe some storminess next weekend as We get into the middle of the month. So let's look at the seven day forecast. This will back up the stats seven days. There's no snow in the forecast on The guy Roofing 7 day forecast, But the wives tale says 10 days, right? So let's go 10 days into the future And right now if we get to day 910 it is a little bit cooler. But right now no snow in the forecast. But definitely temperatures Getting back to closer to January Averages in about 9 to 10 days.
