I grew up in Indianapolis And I had the chance to come here my English teacher nominated me for the Stewart scholarship which I received and Made the best choice of my life to come To Davidson and it was those faculty Mentors in economics and religion and Spanish math who opened up my world we Are looking at Building Bridges with West Charlotte with Wes Davidson across Racial ethnic groupings my thesis at Davidson was on poverty in Charlotte and So I've been working on issues of trying To work for socioeconomic equality in This area since the late 80s it's one Thing to recruit students or diverse Backgrounds and staff and faculty and We're doing all that it's another thing To make sure that the campus has a Culture of belonging not just of Welcoming as if some welcome others into The community but a culture of belonging Where everyone is contributing and feels A part of things in my inaugural address Some of the themes are about continuity And change the tensions between Tradition and the future and that is in Those tensions in those moments that we Live we are always innovating so Traditions that stand still stagnate but Traditions that are always changing Inviting new people in asking about how Society is changing how we educate People for the future those are Dynamic

Traditions and I want to talk about a Dynamic Davidson Yeah Foreign
