Charlotte, also known as the Queen City and the “Hornet’s Nest,” has been home to several interesting lores. Charlotte was first chartered in 1768 by English-Irish immigrants who traveled the Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia to Richmond, Virginia. They named the city after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the wife of King George III of England. Because of its royal history, Charlotte has earned the nickname “Queen City.”

The city began as a small settlement near an Indian trail, and was a natural place to settle. Historically, most major inland towns grew near waterfalls, mountain passes, or natural resources. Charlotte, however, was founded at the intersection of two Indian trails. Consequently, the city was a center for trade. The city had several important historical figures associated with it, including Stonewall Jackson and his wife, who later became a prominent citizen in Charlotte.

As an educational center, Charlotte is an excellent place to visit. There are many museums and historical sites to see, including the Carolinas Aviation Museum, located in Charlotte’s Douglas International Airport. Among other attractions in Charlotte, the Levine Museum of the New South provides a comprehensive interpretation of post-Civil War Southern history. The Charlotte Museum of History and the Hezekiah Alexander Rock House. It’s also home to many businesses.
