ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski broke news that we’ve been expecting all summer. Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan is finalizing talks to sell a majority stake in the NBA franchise to a group led by current Hornets minority owner Gabe Plotkin and Atlanta Hawks minority owner Rick Schnall. It is unclear how much of the franchise Jordan will sell, but he is expected to retain a minority stake.
The Hornets are in the midst of one of the most important offseasons in team history including the 2nd overall pick in the NBA Draft. What effect will the sale have on those decisions?
The potential sale has raised concerns about whether the team would relocate from Charlotte. Although new owners may not have strong ties to the city and the team may not be selling out every night, moving the franchise would be expensive and complicated. Additionally, the Hornets have a lease at the Spectrum Center until 2045, and any new contract would include $215 million in renovations. If a sale does occur, it could lead to changes in the front office and coaching staff, but the timeline for a deal is uncertain.

Charlotte North Carolina – The Entertainment Capital of the Piedmont
Located in the heart of North Carolina’s Piedmont region, Charlotte has some of the state’s most exciting entertainment. The city has teams at every major league, hosts national sporting events and boasts a permanent arts and culture scene that is all its own. Whether you’re a sports fanatic, an art enthusiast or just want to see the latest in live touring performances, Charlotte has something for everyone!
The city’s packed stadiums, courts and fields roar with the thunder of applause all year long as fans flock to cheer on their favorite home teams. The city is home to professional teams in the NBA and NFL, as well as the longest race in NASCAR.
Residents enjoy multiple shopping options, from traditional malls to unique marketplaces that feature local merchants and cuisines. The 7th Street Public Market is a great example, offering fresh local produce and goods along with bars and restaurants that make for an interesting and delicious lunch break.
For a high-culture fix, the city features several museums and galleries including the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, which has an impressive collection that spans various time periods and styles. Discovery Place, an interactive science museum and center, is another popular choice with exhibits that are geared towards children as well as adults.
For a change of pace, you can head just an hour west and find yourself in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains or 3-4 hours east and be at one of the beautiful Atlantic beaches. As a financial hub, the city attracts professionals and offers competitive salaries in some industries. However, the rising cost of living has made it a less affordable option than it once was.
