Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin was in critical condition after he collapsed on the field Monday night, the NFL said, and Buffalo’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals was suspended.

Hamlin was administered CPR on the field, ESPN reported, and he was surrounded by teammates, some of them in tears, after he was hurt while tackling Bengals receiver Tee Higgins.

Higgins led with his right shoulder, which hit Hamlin in the chest. Hamlin then wrapped his arms around Higgins’ shoulders and helmet to drag him down. Hamlin got to his feet, appeared to adjust his face mask with his right hand, and then fell backward about three seconds later and lay motionless.

Hamlin was treated on the field by team and independent medical personnel and local paramedics, the NFL said, and he was taken by ambulance to University of Cincinnati Medical Center. ESPN reported that teammate Stefon Diggs later joined Hamlin at the hospital.

The NFL announced more than an hour after the injury that the game would not resume. When or if the teams would return to the field was not immediately clear.

We know that there was some sort of Deliberation period where they were trying to Decide whether to go forward with the game. I'm just curious if you have Any insights into, you know, If we would actually see This game played again, How that would look? Would we? Would we want to see this play so soon again, I guess, Given all that's happened. Well, you know, this, this game was, You know, billed as a important game and that Took a back seat to the injury of Demark. I mean, both the Bengals and and the Bills Are are vying for who's going to be first and The playoffs and positioning in the playoffs. But all that took a back seat immediately. Sort of medical care that could be Ushered in quickly in a time of crisis To an NFL football field like this? Yeah, but so typically what Happens is your training staff, You always have an orthopedic, You have a General practitioner, Dr. You got a number of medical Staff that's on your team. And typically when somebody Gets hurt immediately, The trainer is the first, you know, The first line of defense. They go out there and along with the doctors. And then when they have to do Bring an ambulance on the field Because sometimes if it's a ACL, They just bring a car on their car, The guy out and they can go back inside And do X-rays and things of that nature. But this situation is different because They immediately took him to the hospital, Cincinnati hospital. And that tells you that this is Really a critical situation. Time is of the essence. Let's get him some help because he Doesn't need to be on this field. We got to get him into the place that we can.
