Frank Reich: It’s been a very productive offseason

Reich talked about the natural transition for players, learning defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero’s scheme, and updated on injuries.

Okay just to get started right I mean It's hard to believe we're here just uh Mandatory mini camp last two days of Practice today and tomorrow it's been Very productive off season guys have Been tuned in attentive we've gotten a Lot accomplished had a good day today And want to finish it off strong Tomorrow It's a natural yes it's a natural Transition right to guys more and more The more we're going back and running Plays that we've run over and over again So the fluidity uh you know just letting Instincts come over take over right we Talk a lot about you know we do our Drill work we run this stuff over and Over again because we don't you know you Don't want players thinking you just Want to react and get out there and React let their instincts come into play I think we're doing a good job with that Is it Supposedly You know I don't think it's going to be That much of difference you know it's Really the total scheme you know it's More the total scheme everybody's so Multiple these days so I think it's more About the scheme and what's unique about Agero scheme and um and what I really Appreciate about how the defensive staff Is approaching it you know getting to Know our players right and tweaking the

Scheme it's already been done you know Throughout OTAs I can feel talking to EJ You know oh boy we like the way this guy Does this and the way that guy does that So putting things in that really weren't In there before and adjusting and Adapting so we're looking for our Players what they can do best and then Put them in position what have you Learned about the other guys I mean I think it's been it's a good Group right I mean it's uh Utor has done a good job making the Transition Marquis has looked really Good he's been a very consistent you Know it's a position change for yi tour And he's really adapted well I thought The first couple weeks for you tour you Know you could tell it was in it was a a Definite different thing and now you can See him getting more and more Comfortable with it Um I just think overall it's been a good Group and you know with Brian out Um you know they've gotten a lot of reps A lot of work In the market out there that you feel Like you're brought in and helped us I mean you know as a coach I always Think what we got is enough you know Like I love our guys I love our team Um you know but Scott's job is to you Know continually look and see what's out There and build the roster right we you

Know we owe that to the team right we're Trying to we're trying to get better and So Um that's part of the process Frank Yeah you know he he kind of tweaked his Hamstring you know it's not you know It's not crazy but just you know we need To get that taken care of he'll be fine Surgical no and then uh Yes he's got a peck he's got a strained Peck so um again same thing uh he'll be Fine for training camp Um not surgical Um just needs time to recover Yeah it's a big deal right I mean you Know we're always you know he can fly Milton can fly and um so that's a big Deal you're looking for Speed on defense You know that can make plays right that That can lead to production so these Guys are all getting a lot of reps and Opportunities to show us that Right yeah he's making great progress we Miss him out here um but he's making Great progress he should be ready to go For training camp Phenomenal leader um even with him not Playing like you said has been totally Into it in the meeting room on the Practice field he's locked in Um he's making good progress physically So you know really expecting him to you Know not only be a great player for us On the field this year but also be a

Great leader Well that's a great question Um I don't know every time I you know I Know he hasn't even taken a snap out Here every time I see him walk out in The field I said man I'm glad he's on Our team Um He's big and long and strong I mean I got to see him play more just kind of See who he reminds me of but um he's got A presence about him physically and Mentally that expect expect a continued Big things from him Really good Yes because what I am learning about him Is You know like most great players he's Very smart he's he's very smart period But then a very smart football player so That allows us to do different things With them and you know sure we mainly Want to rush the passer but um but it Does allow us to do other things allows Us to use him as rushing the passer in Different ways so we'll see how that all Plays out Trying to Find her how do you compensate for that What's your philosophy yeah actually you Know it's kind of a bummer right because You want to see your guys but like There's another another side of you that Secretly is like saying okay we're not

In a season we really don't need you now Loved for you to be out there getting Rest but guess what's happening these Other guys are getting a ton of reps and You're building depth and strength on Your football team and that cannot be Understated how important that is so With these other guys out we got so many Of these other guys at every position That are getting multiple reps giving Them more confidence giving us more Confidence in them as coaches so taking Advantage of the situation is a big deal Right this wide receiver And overturned for the most part and Wouldn't you please see none of these Guys anything jumping out of it yeah I Like I like them I like to I like the Room feeling's the leader he's doing a Great job it's good to see DJ you know Back out there Chenault is a really Unique Piece you know Terrace Marshalls You know look good mangoes you know I Think Mango's got a chance you know he's A rookie so he's got you know ways to go It's hard for rookie receivers to Develop but he's got the right mentality And attitude and I'm really across the Board Um you know we like to spread the ball Around thielen yeah he's the leader Shark is our you know big play guy but I Think the ball will get spread around I Think you know I think that's the way

Our offense has always been built that's What we want to do this year what are The new challenges that this phase Presents to a rookie quarterback and how This is the price kind of Yeah I just think Bryce adapted well Right I mean the challenges are to uh You know you're really not game plan and You're going up against a defense that You know we're no we're not going to Face in season so um you're running our Plays and they're not being game planned For the reasons that we would game plan Them against the defense so you just got To take that with a grain of salt you Got to stay locked in on the concept Understand what we're trying to do and Then try to coach it off to film and Translate it hey you know our defense is Playing these schemes but versus these Other teams these four down teams and How they're doing this and this coverage And that coverage here's how this play Comes up against that so the challenge Is playing all of our plays out against Multiple looks and coverages and just Talking through that you know in the Film room Report boxes You know command of the offense Protections you know understanding the Protection scheme Um you know and then just showing Accuracy and you know being able to

Handle uh you know being able to handle The offense in general so it's been good You know we still got a ways to go but He he's been on point so is Andy I think That room and Matt's been good too I Think the room's been really good I Think Josh McCown's doing a good job With those guys Parks Frazier and then Thomas Brown I think has done a good job With the offense keeping us honed in on You know really what we're going to do Pretty remarkable Yeah it's a great story and you know if You know Jordan he's the kind of guy That can do that um that's that's why He's here you know we worked him out you Know the other day he had a really good Workout so you know invite him here to Training camp you know get a really good Look at him I know the person and the Player you know this is obviously a Transition for him and and but excited About you know these couple days to get A chance to get a look at him A lot of the folks have been on Brice Nebraska over the past few weeks Matt's made significant strides matters Made significant strides Um you know as far as command of the Offense as far as seeing it you know Moving through his progressions accuracy Um happy happy with the progress Matt Has made Right that's the big question right so

You have that philosophical question of Do you use up a spot on the 53 For your third quarterback and if he and If they prove worthy of that you do you Know you do because it's a benefit but Um you know you wait you see and then You know the other thing you got to say Is you always want to use that spot for A quarterback if you can but the flip Side of that and as you know haven't Been around the block a few times Sometimes you get in a roster situation Where you're like can we really afford To do that so you can't say it's an Absolute rule but that's would be our That would be the general thinking Foreign You know I mean I think that's what Josh Is you know Josh McCown the quarterback Coach you know they have things they're Focusing on every day right little Things that are the little details and Drops mechanics progressions Um you know just the mechanics and Progression of you know running plays Getting the checks How We Do the whole Operation so Um you know we're trying to always get Better at all those and make it so right We want and it's happening right before Our eyes in a sense but you know that Just needs to be automatic for the Quarterback like just breathing air like Okay boom boom let me do this this is

That's just the way we run our offense We really give the quarterback a lot of Latitude to check to move things around We know Bryce is a kind of guy and so is Andy that can do that and can manage That but it just doesn't happen Overnight it's a new scheme new offense And that's happening and like the Direction it's taken Play in this Concerned yeah a great question it no Scott it really doesn't because I actually thought we'd have seen a Whole lot more balls batted down because We're not going live and so And we're telling them not to hit the Quarterback so the defensive line they Rush and then they pull off and they're Standing there you know more guys Standing with their hands up so to be Quite honest I expected a whole lot more Bull spotted down from all the Quarterbacks and uh so yeah I didn't Think much about it um Thought thought the quarterbacks are Seeing it and seeing the holes well Thank you thank
