Reich spoke about OTA progress and working with offensive coordinator Thomas Brown.
Nice sunny day got a little heat out Here that was good Red Zone work today Right that was a big step in our Improvement and as a team and and both Offensively and defensively good Introduction you know get our schemes in See what we can do who can do what so Good first day Experience Oh absolutely there have been there have Been multiple system overloads you know And actually you want that a little bit Right it's a fine line you push a little Bit you install Just enough and then you keep pushing Them you want to see who can handle it Who can't and um and then you back off You know you get a system overload then You back off a little bit let's go back To the basics then boom push them again System overload back off that's kind of The way it works Um we're we're about halfway through our Install process um So you got a couple we got another good Red Zone day coming another Third Day Short yardage install coming and then a Few more play action pass stuff and some Drop back stuff that we catch on the Tail end right That seems to be when you need a Quarterback with that high processing Ability that price is Supposed to have what are you seeing
From him in that regard in terms of Being able to identify where he needs Yeah I mean in the Red Zone absolutely You need High processing speed and you Also need great accuracy but what you Also need you know all 11 guys being on The same page receivers the windows are Tight you know we've worked really hard In the last couple days you know work in These Red Zone routes you know trying to Get them just right so so we're all on The same page but it tightens up down There everybody needs to be on point Frank uh you talked about uh doing Install we just saw DJ chart involved in Install we haven't been out here Obviously but how involved has he been Uh in recent days and what's his yeah Yeah so the last couple days he's only Uh he's doing some rehab work on the Side and then when we get to the Walk-through portions he's in on the Walk-through portions so Um you know maybe there's a chance he Could get in some live action that last Week maybe we just hold him to training Camp he's making good progress Ive question about Hayden Hurst Same thing he'll actually be out here on On Friday both him and DJ will uh on I Mean tomorrow excuse me tomorrow we'll Get them and they won't be any team reps But they're going to start getting some Routes on air but really no competitive
Stuff but both those guys will get a Little bit of that tomorrow Yeah What has impressed you about the Mentality that rice has to really want To throw Yeah I mean Fearless right I mean we Want our quarterbacks all need to be Fearless and and at the same time it's Always that healthy tension right of Being Fearless but being smart in the Red Zone we think touchdown shutdown you Know there's times when there's times as A quarterback when you got to take that Chance you gotta it's a tight window can I make that throw is are we going to Convert and then there's times to check It down and over the years you see the Quarterbacks that can become great and We're just starting out as an offense so We got a long way to go but that's what We got to see if we can do if we can Execute as a quarterback when you know When the when the touchdown throw is There can we make it and then do we have The the maturity to understand oh I Gotta check this one down Yeah you know we're working through that Talking through with that with a coach Tabor and um You know I think it's a good thing you Know we'll play you know obviously play By the rules you know just kind of think That through all the repercussions of
That Um you know we're talking about it daily What was the thought process behind Taking on Red Zone at this point in the Insult Um just kind of our normal progression You know the way we've kind of always Done it you know we hit a couple days of First and second down then we go third Down and then we go Red Zone and then we Come back to third down the next day Then back to Red Zone the following day But the installs shrink as you go those First Four installs are all pretty heavy it's All a little bit system overload and Then from five on down the install start To shrink because you want to keep going Back and running your original core Plays and then supplement that with your Complimentary place Some guys that maybe would be overlooked In previous years or on paper uh Seemingly Step Up Derek Wright just had A couple of really good catches when We've been here what have you seen Prevention yeah he's like a um and Excited about Derek you know excited About the whole receiver group um really It's the whole group has has been good Um you know listen experience tells me That uh I you love to see guys look good In OTAs but you really got to wait till You get the training camp before you you
Know before you get too excited about Anybody so and I think the players know That we as coaches know that that Doesn't mean that we don't want to shine That you know as a player as you know When we're running our plays we want Everything to work but you just temper Your Enthusiasm at this time of year and Uh you know and just understand we got a Long way to go About installing offense and be about Halfway through the process when will You guys as you kind of put together What you want to do Thomas has brought To the table that kind of thing when Will you know what it's going to look Like I think we're starting to know that Already There was a lot of car you know in our Kind of melding of systems you know I I If I were arbitrarily putting a number On it maybe 30 or 40 percent of it was similar maybe A little bit higher and then but just Getting the language that we wanted to Use some of it we brought the new Language some of it we kept the old Language and then in the passing game You know kind of same deal so it's been Exciting you know it's been exciting That that diversity of thought different Philosophy how do we bring it together Under our players really thinking about Players not plays you know who do we
Have what are we going to do That's kind of our approach DTA right that's what a DTA decision Making timing accuracy decision making Timing accuracy you know that's really The game at quarterback so you know it's It's been good you know we still got Work to do but uh everybody's showing Progress Has been used in a lot of different ways Throughout his career what how creative Do you think you guys can be working Well you know it'll be interesting you Know I think laviska has you know been One of those guys out here that's looked Good Um you know we'll continue to Investigate the different roles that he Can play obviously I you know I even if We had this grandiose plan which maybe We do you know but I wouldn't write Reveal that you know here and now all The different ways you can use him but You know you look at guys like Debo Samuel and stuff like that you say well Can levisca do some of that stuff of Course he can so you know we'll Experiment with some of that stuff Um you know we'll experiment with some Of that stuff and see what you know some Of it will get Incorporated and some of It won't Be able to do a pretty spiritive Practice today with blue stocking trash
To the to the officials how do you like That kind of backwards No well that's why when I got this job That's what I do Staley was the first Phone call you know because I I know the Energy that he brings to the practice And it's not just he's not just a he is That but he's a whole lot he's a great Coach and he's a great teammate but um You know he he does bring juice and Energy we want a competitive environment And uh I think nobody's better at that Than do Staley there's no question about That right talked about the Collaborative process between you and Thomas when we first talked to Thomas How how has that been and how difficult Is it for you to to seed some of the Control that that maybe you wouldn't Have otherwise yeah I mean at one level It's not easy because like you know It's your baby you know what I mean and And you don't want to you don't want to Give up you know but you understand hey I'm adopting we're adopting some you Know this is going to make our family Bigger and stronger and that's really The approach that we've taken and it and And it has and Thomas makes it easy Because of I respect him so you know I Respect his football mind I respect who He is as a person Um the couple disagreements you know We've had sometimes okay Thomas you win
That one we're going to do it your way Sometimes it's you know what Um let's let's um we're gonna do it the Old way and it's just been a give and Take and I think you know through that You know this isn't Kumbaya right I mean This is like we're challenging each Other like nope I don't like that and he Said no I don't that doesn't feel good To me Um and we'll have those moments where We'll challenge each other but it's Always under the right spirit and I Think it's resolving in what we want it To result in Running backs in multiple Like you have that with this current Group yeah I do I love that you know I Really do Um love the by committee thing and the Different role things Um like to involve everybody now listen Miles Sanders says look good and you Know I mean at this point he's our Number one guy but Um the other running but you know tubers Look good raheems look good I mean the Whole group is the whole group has shown Good promise so we'll see how it Continues to develop but excited about The running back room Out of the player side is there any Surprises and things to stand up for you This week you know I mean I think the
Surprise they're not the surprise the Good news I put it this way the good News is I'm just excited about what what You feel is the chemistry what you feel Is the attitude about the players you Know wanting to work the coaches really Taking the right approach you know with The systems you know putting in our Systems but also collaborating with Players in an appropriate way to kind of Tweak things to get better I think it's Going in the right direction You know what I'd say my assessment of It is each room each position group has Had some good moments and some struggles You know and that's to be expected so uh So you know it's all this it's early Right we're excited we're enthusiastic But again we temper our enthusiasm we're Just focused on let's get better today Let's get better this week you know the Season what I said the other day to the Guys was the season will be here sooner Than you think so every one of these Practices is really important we've got To make the most of it and I think we're Doing that Thank you
