Frank Reich updates Bryce Young’s status

The Panthers head coach talks to the media about the quarterback position in Week 3.

All right good to get back to work after A Monday night game Um you know we had a walk through today Uh obviously you know late night game Guys beat up a little bit so had good Work out there today really guys were Locked in really focused Um made the most of our time out in the Field today obviously I know you got the Injury report I'll address the obvious That you know Bryce was listed as a Projected dnp Due to an ankle so you know we'll we'll See how he is tomorrow but that's all The update I have for you right now Don't know the exact play don't know the Exact play And what would you say is chances Um don't know the answer to that right Now we'll see how he is tomorrow I I yeah we'll just I do not Do you think that impacted his Performance I do not yeah I do not think It impacted his performance Talk you know based on talking to him About it No you know I mean you got you guys Already know we only had two on the Roster and the plan all along was to go Two for a few weeks and then bring in a Third eventually thinking it would Probably be Jake because we had him in Training camp sometimes at the beginning Of the year I like to have a few extra

Scott and I talked let's have a few Extra guys at some other positions we Can get by for a few weeks so Um So yeah that's it was that was part of The plan Going forward Um you know we're going to Game Plan You know our core stuff is always going To be our core stuff you know and Whether it's Bryce or Andy Um I'm not sure there would be much Difference between the two and a game Plan Maybe Maybe a couple plays but not much so you Know we'll just we'll just move forward Like we normally would Approach right now that you're looking At Um Possible starter when you're game plan Of the day not knowing what's gonna Happen tomorrow how do you look at that Well I mean Andy got to work out there Today so you so that's you know that's All we have to go off for right now but No we take the approach of we're game Planning for our team to win the game You know to win a game so and our Quarterback to execute at a high level Whoever that is The decision to bring Dalton in on you Know short yardage plays um can you talk A little bit about that

Yeah no I mean uh Andy's a very Experienced uh QB Um winning QB Um we think it adds a little bit of Element of mystery and surprise And to keep defenses up on why are they Bringing this guy in Um you know I've done that I've done That before in past years and other Offenses with other quarterbacks Um Yeah totally yeah I really yeah it was All due and I really mean this with all Due respect like you know the fact that They're saying that about aside I really Could care less about that we're doing It for Um You know strategic reasons you know Strategic reasons why do you think [Music] Um Because we could do more than one thing You know and I think that's what Andy Gives us you know it's not like you're Just bringing a guy in to do one thing He can do multiple things Um And and you feel comfortable because It's you know as we're saying it's hard To just come off the bench for one play And at the quarterback position and pop Back out right I mean that's that's a Little bit unique it's it's not totally

Normal although it happens more and more These days with Wildcat stuff Um But Andy's has the kind of experience That we feel like we can do that with he Can come off and there's his pulse Doesn't change you know like when on you Know Monday night when I said hey let's Go you're in you know I kiss pulse that Doesn't change okay and there's five Plays you know that we got for him okay Which one of these which one of these Are running boom you know and he knows He knows what his manual plays is and uh You know that's kind of the way if we Continue to do that that's kind of the Approach it we'll take Race return Uh Monday night Monday night just heard They had been in for treatment but You know and then it was until Tuesday You know Tuesday Um you know Tuesday I knew you know I Don't think much of the Monday night Treatment thing you know just okay I see The injury report and see who came in For treatment and then just kind of I Don't make much of it until it's 24 Hours later next day we'll see how they Respond and then he was still on there So He called will you air on the side One thing I've learned as a head coach About making these kind of decisions is

It's a threefold decision it's the Doctor the player and the and and the Head coach so all three have a say in The decision obviously weighing most Heavily on the doctor then the player And then you know and then the coach as Far as because what I've learned over The years is hey I'm not a medical Doctor so trust what the doctor says b Trust the player because players know Their body so c as the head coach try to Navigate and do the right thing for the Team and the player All right I mean I mean if Andy's a Starter and we got a lot of confidence You know we have a lot of confidence Um this is you know this is why you You know this is why you bring someone Like Andy in you know our our goal is to Put our team in position to win Championships and you know even despite A tough start that's still our vision That's still our goal that's what we're Working towards and you know my Experience personally as a player and as A coach is that you're going to need Somebody you know for one game or two or Three or Somewhere along the line and um and You're going to need to win those games And I you know if Andy plays we believe He gives us a very good chance to win Further information about their miles Sanders no further information you know

Obviously they they all made it through The game They all made it through the game they All projected as limited so Um I think they're all in decent shape But we'll see how they respond in the Next 24 hours No doubt um You know so he wasn't you know he didn't Take the Reps today but he's out there He was out there you know locked in on Every call like he was under Center you Know so so he's getting ready to play uh Whether it's this week or whenever Because every rep is important so Um yeah of confidence Confidence in Bryce to if there's days And listen it's a long season uh you Know At least most of the quarterbacks I've Been around you know all of them all all Of them you know they're missed a couple Practices throughout the year I mean That's that's Normally get banged up you play that Position you're going to get banged up And um you know and you might have to Miss a day or two along the way I was just going to follow up on that Logistically it is a short week you're Flying 2500 miles Is this maybe the worst week to have Price just a little bit make up in our Garden I mean it just really depends yes

I mean and you know according to the Books yeah you'd obviously like to play You won every minute you have to recover And get to full strength although you Know once you get to week three or four In the season everybody's pretty bang You know starting to get banged up but Um that'll all be factored in the Decision by the doctor by the player by The coach Um that that factors into the equation Absolutely I mean that's our bro I mean not like This team loves that that man I mean This team loves that man and respects That man so Um You know we all understand the business Side of it but uh it doesn't go Unnoticed To be an observer and sit back and watch A little bit and let Andy handle it and Would that be a benefit of him at all Just sort of hypothetically Well I you know I don't want to get into The hypotheticals Um I just think you know Bryce is the Kind of player that no matter what his Status is he's going to always be Working to get better that's just that's Just who he is that's how I think he'll Operate Um So and I have that confidence in him in

That Yeah there is um no doubt I agree with That and um You know so I I kind of have some General we have some general principles That we operate by you know they're just General principles they're not absolutes That we say hey I'm not going to go into What those are but we we have internally We have those like how many days of Practice is it needed for a young player To play versus a 10-year vet you know You know maybe you got a 10-year vet You're you know if he's a younger player Maybe you want him to practice a little Bit more those are that's an idea of Stuff that we think through and goes Into the equation and um it all matters You have any idea who's going to start a Check spot yeah and who's uh yeah Um listen you know kamu played very well Um You know so he's gonna he's gonna get a Lot of play you know we might we might Rotate some through we're gonna we're Gonna continue to evaluate that you know We we don't want to Camus also such a Great special teams contributor So we just got a way out you know how We're going to approach that Um but you know I want to give Camu all The credit he deserves for how he Stepped in there and played so if he Plays every snap he's earned it you know

What I mean and if we if we end up Deciding to you know rotate anybody Through there Um you know it's only because we're Trying to do what's best for the team as Far as Making the best use of all of our Players Thank you Have No we all took that law you know we all Took that loss heart I mean you know you Know especially at the beginning of the Year because right it's natural at the Beginning of the year All of our expectations are you know They're very high right they're very High just so you know then you get into The season and you know you face reality This it's up and down season so Um you know you wish it upon yourself to Go through that early but Um you know kind of kind of the theme Has been hey this is this has happened For us not to us you know what I mean so We'll learn from it we'll grow from it It will make us a better team as we move Forward and Bryce will certainly is in That category I mean leading the way in That category so Thank you
