McCown talked about working with Bryce Young and becoming a coach after a long playing career.
Hey just just real quick Um you know we lived in South Park for a Number of years and I know there's a Really really massive fire going on There's uh you know they're sorting Through that and I just want to say Right now just on behalf of us that the Panthers are just thinking about those People and the First Responders and Everybody involved that's a tough tough Situation and um and so we we're praying And hoping for the best and uh so just Thinking of those folks Thank you first Mike Hey Josh Mike came from the Charlotte Observer sorry to quickly transition to Football Um but With Bryce Obviously size is something that's Brought up with him but he's known for His high release and I was just curious How much did that factor into your Evaluation of him during the draft Yeah I mean it's it's obviously part of It uh unique to our league For you know a quarterback you know that That you get into the average heights And different things Um and so uh but when you turn on the Tape you don't feel that you never felt It and you you know you look at all the Studies and the balls being thrown over The middle especially that's where you
Get into some issues and his percentages Are high as high or higher than than Others you know and taller quarterbacks When we you know made several different Comparisons with with uh different Players so uh at the end of the day uh That never really entered into the Evaluation Um you know or as a critical Factor Because it just didn't show up on the Tape To monitor that Or that kind of bring him in when he Needs to Yeah that's that's a great question and It's a challenge and we Embrace that Challenge Um you know with guys that can play that Way that can play off schedule there's Some Artistry involved and we understand That that's unique in their gifting and Uh and you don't want to take that away From them so uh like with any any great Artist there's a delicate balance with With uh you know with letting their Greatness flow but but but keeping it at A level that's not a detriment to the Team and uh and that's you know that's When it's really special and that's what Makes him makes him really good is that He's at the college level so far showed A great barometer of when and when not To do that you know and that's what I Think special players do and uh
Certainly part of why we drafted him Um two questions I'll start with my Bryce question then I'll Circle back to Another one Um how much time would you say you're Spending during the course of the Deadline now Uh Hey Joe uh haven't seen you in Glasses like that down there in there so They look good Um you know uh it's uh it's as as much As legally possible you know so uh as as Much as the league permits we take it up To the minute as best we can uh because We need that with him right now Um you know we we're we're all it's just A new startup program for everyone and So uh so we're all growing and learning As it goes and and then now we're Onboarding uh Bryce and bringing him Into that learning process together so That's been really good but uh every Waking second that we can be together uh Within the ramifications of the CBA um We are we are together and we're Spending time and and trying to maximize That time so uh it's been good he's been Great he is a worker he loves to be Around it and uh you know he he's Probably not uh up to date on all all The things of the CBA but um but he's But he wants to be a part of as much as He can be and uh and you know so uh we We take advantage of that and and
Um you know he's it's clear every time We step into a meeting with him it's Clear that he's taken the material Whatever was presented the day before He's taken that and he spent time with It at home and he's digesting it he Comes with questions and that that's What a pro does he comes with questions He's got great questions very insightful Um you know a lot of times well beyond Just what a rookie would ask and so That's encouraging and and that Expedites the process for us meeting Wise because we can get to some you know Second third fourth level type answers Which are encouraging but at the same Time we got to grow them just like Everybody else but um but he's doing a Great job of of taking the information And processing it and uh and trying to You know this is kind of the downloading Phase right now of all that information He's doing a good job doing that and Then my non-price question that was you And sort of detection situation job at Two different Cycles what percent I Experienced life Yeah it was a great experience I Appreciate them uh you know you know Having me involved in that process but Um but really for me just being here This was the right thing and this is What I'm excited about and uh you know Things happen for a reason and and I
Certainly uh and value in every day that I step in to this building and get to be Around uh you know coach right and and Guys like coach Caldwell and Coach Avro And and we just have fantastic people And and uh you know worked with Chris Tabor uh a while back and getting to Getting you know cross paths with him Again and so Frank's done an Unbelievable job of putting some great Men in this building and and not only High character people but great football People and so from that standpoint to be Around these guys and learn uh I'm just So so thankful for that and uh and Um and so that's that's what I'm focused On is is you know continue to you know Be the best quarterback coach I can be Uh in this in this uh opportunity and With this in within this organization And uh and then you know just you know We have obviously a huge task on our Hands with the number one pick and Growing Bryce and bring him along so That's the focus and uh you know good Experience but that's in the rearview I appreciate your words on the fire I've Been believing to the set of watching it Today uh we wanted to ask you a few Questions Um you mentioned about Bryce's ability To process um How much more decision making Embrace Handle on the field like play call and
That kind of thing more than a typical Rookie because of this ability to Process Yeah well I mean again we won't overdo It and uh and you know I think uh Obviously coach Browns has done a Fantastic job of of you know as we as we Build this offense of of you know having Having some of those things in mind uh So we will go at his Pace as far as you Know how we feel like Bryce is handling And and you're right like obviously the Ability to process at a high rate allows For some of those things to be expedited But you don't want to take that for Granted and you can in this league Because this league has has a history of Humbling everyone at some point and uh And so uh as well as he played in the SEC and at Alabama we do want to bring Them along the right way and so like I Said it's encouraging we step in those Meetings you can tell he's digested the Material he's bringing questions those Things are encouraging uh but you have To temper the excitement you have to you Know to rein it in and uh and like I Said I think coach Brown's done a great Job of that of helping us you know do That and and then just uh and then the Drawing on the experience of around us You know Frank's work with some with you Know a ton of quarterbacks and then Coach Caldwell having having helped
Bring Peyton Manning along so uh you Draw on these different experiences and And uh and utilize that to kind of feel The pace of what we need to do with Bryce Um so because the the the easy thing is To go man he's so smart let's give it to Him all but let's let's build it the Right way let's set a firm foundation so That you know when we do go Um it's there's it's it's efficient and It's not there's you know it's not all Over the place and what how much are Weighted in Alabama's offense which a Lot of about 11 personnel will translate Or what air honestly offense is going to Be Well obviously we look at the things That he he does well but we have you Know we have our we have different Personnel everybody's got different Personnel and we got great coaches that Are going to build uh build our offense Around you know what our guys do the Best and what you know uh what our what Our quarterbacks do the best and so Uh so you certainly see some of those Things on tape I think it's benefited Bryce to be around a coach like Bill O'Brien to be around coaches like Steve Sarkeesian obviously uh coach Saban now We're standing but from an offensive Standpoint Having those guys having Pro experience
You can tell you can feel that in the Way that he talks about plays and uh and So that that input that he'll he'll be Able to have will be uh will be Important you know as he grows but right Now it's just about him learning this Offense downloading what we have and uh And then you know one of these days We'll be there uh whether where you know It's more about you know detailing and Specifying around uh different skill Sets and different things he's like but Right now he's got to learn how we do it Uh digest that and then move forward Alabama uh it's important um to what you Guys are going to do off next week no It's great he's been great Um he's been great so we're we're very Pleased with that you're right relative To to college uh he didn't have a ton of Snaps to that uh he probably tripled That in rookie mini camp and uh and Those were those were executed at a high Level and uh you know it's it's you know We want to we want to be a multi-faceted Offense that can do whatever it takes to Win the football game and when you talk About uh the things that Coach Brown has Has brought from from the Run game that He's experienced out in LA and and uh in The different pieces and the success They've had in Indianapolis uh with some Of their run game stuff we want to be Able to do whatever it takes to win that
Football game and we won't be limited by Under Center or gun or whatever that That may be and so coming out of the Meeting camp we were you know very Encouraged by how well that was executed And we feel like that you know those Things are wide open moving forward Appreciate it yep Hey Josh thanks for the time this Afternoon wondering what's your Evaluation of prices footwork coming out Of college and through a couple of weeks With him and how important is that going To be to his development yeah that's a Great question Um you know everybody's different and uh We talk about it all the time there are There's timing to every play that we That we install especially specifically In the past game and when we want that Ball to come out and there has to be a Rhythm uh that that connects your feet To that route and that in that concept And we want to make sure our players Understand what that rhythm is and and When that ball needs to come out and and So that we can play fast we can be Efficient and we can avoid sacks and so Uh Bryce is a unique player because you See a lot of feel on tape and as we saw Talked about earlier he has a he has a Play making capacity to him uh that's That's special to his game and we want To honor that and make sure that's a
Part of it but again the NFL we have to We have to you know help him mold what He does best to the NFL and uh and That's a that's a fun process and it's Fun to learn you know his footwork uh How he feels about certain amount of Concepts and then say hey this is how we Do it and and then there's there's no Middle ground on some of these things But ultimately understanding the timing And the rhythm of that of of those Concepts is the most important and the Key thing for him and uh and I think That that process so far these first few Weeks has been great Josh uh Bryce is a rookie you're in a New role too you're how's it been Getting used to being a coach now Instead of the thing you've done for so Long and there have been moments when It's in minicamp the other weekend or This week where you're like and I can Still do this no I don't know Um you know I think I think every every Uh guy my age has those moments and then Uh and then you you do it for like you Know I throw three or four balls and Then you're you know your body says Otherwise it reminds you why you're Coaching so Um so yeah I I'm having a blast like I Said I'm very very thankful to be able To get to work with the guys I get to Work with from a coaching standpoint and
And uh you know I the last you know Probably a handful of years of my career I feel like those guys were calling me Coach when I was in the Huddle anyway Because I was so old I'd say somebody Say oh yeah yeah coach so now it just Makes sense now now it doesn't make me Cringe so much because I'm like well Good I'm actually a coach so I think It's better now Um and just enjoy enjoying this part of You know this this business and there's Several sides to to what makes the NFL Special and and coaches obviously are a Huge huge part of it and there's been so Many that have impacted my life and and Uh and so to be on this side of it and Hopefully draw on some of those years of Playing uh to bring that to the table And share that to to these guys Um is the goal and and uh and I'm Enjoying doing it and it's fun being out There and and you know you see why guys Transition you know especially players That transition into into coaching Because it's you know it'll never be the Same as playing but there's a difference And and uh and I do think and I've Noticed this obviously in high school Coaching both way back when I you know Did it the first time around early early In Charlotte and out in Marvin Ridge and Then my time in Myers Park And then in Texas last year is that
There's something special there's a Different feeling you know there's a Different feeling you get to throw a Touchdown you celebrate with your Teammates and that's fun but there's Also something special when you when you Take take someone you say hey we're Going to work on this footwork we're Going to work on this throw and then you See it manifest itself on the grass or In a game and you see the joy that they Get from it and the joy that their Teammates get from it and so that's Special in and of itself and that's it's A different kind of feeling but but um But it's the same as far as the joy that You get from that and I sometimes I Guess for me a little bit more uh Gratifying because I think there's more Depth to that it's not just you it's Like you plus somebody else and and that Makes it special so I'm really enjoying That part of it and I'm thankful for the Room I'm in right now I love the guys That are in there uh Andy Dalton's been Fantastic and and you know just getting To know these other guys and and and Matt's Works super hard so uh so yeah It's they've made those guys have made That transition very very seamless for Me Last month or so for your life you're Like okay I see this differently than I Would have
Oh yeah no doubt Well here here's the Best example I can tell you is like when You when you get information as a player Right and as a quarterback especially And you're going to go and you're going To you know let's say it's a it's a play That you're going to check or you're Going to feel you know feel through or Whatever like hey you know the coach Gives you kind of the he gives you the Details and you listen but you you know As a quarterback you go this is how I'm Gonna handle it I'm going to check to This uh against this pressure or I'm Gonna I'm gonna kill it at this play Versus this and you have your way of Solving problems right well The detail in which like it's just Different the detail in which you go About thinking through that as a player Is different than a coach because you Might explain it as a player very very You know briefly and just succinctly Because it's just you know you handle it Once you get on the grass As a player I mean as a coach you stop At the lines so the way that you explain That is different because you have to Transfer the information to that player In a way that it can manifest itself on The grass so that's different so when You when you're the final say as a Quarterback you're on the you're like I'll handle it I got it when you when
You stop at the sideline as a coach You're like does he really have it or Not so your way of thinking about plays Explaining plays studying the opponent Studying place it just it's it's got to Be that much further because you want to Be able to relate that information to The player as best as possible Yes we only have time for maybe one or Two more so I'm gonna get a Jeff Hawkins And Josh Grant Thank you and every coach gotcha Please Uh what what is like learning from right And how will it help you down the road Well I mean just it's great to learn From from Frank you know he's he's Obviously had a had an unbelievable Playing career we played a long time and Uh and so we share similarities in that Regard but at the same time Um you know he's been a head coach his Second second goal around he's you know Coach quarterbacks he's worked his way Up and uh coached different rooms so He's got he's got a wealth of knowledge And just different experiences but um But it's it's always beneficial if you Have someone that's uh you know kind of Seen uh this this NFL life through your Eyes and you know he spent his career You know most as a backup and played a Long time and so I think you know There's a shared experience there uh
That you know I can understand how how He applies that experience to to that Role and uh and so we've had a little Bit of conversations here and there Um that have confirmed that and those Have just been special to me and I Appreciate that and and uh you know Hopefully you know that'll continue on Down the road Over to you captain All right Okay we lost Josh uh Joe you can go Ahead and take the last one They're not nice Um I've got a particular question but I Heard you never got that game of course With Steve With any of the guys at top 30 or guys Already know No no no no we didn't you know we we Thought there may be an opportunity There on the 30 visit to shoot the ball Around but um but you know we were so we Were so uh engulfed in like information And testing what they knew you know from A football standpoint so uh so not this Time around you know maybe another time Obviously uh I love Hoops but we're We're in football mode now and that's The focus so didn't get that Um you know it's probably probably good For those guys What was That it was great you know to obviously
I first you know first time coaching and And to be involved in that and uh I Think we you know Frank said it as we Were going through it you know one of The one of the more I think one of the Biggest takeaways for me was just kind Of The Fellowship of the group of those People you know as we moved from City to City evaluating those quarterbacks and Just getting to know everybody a little Bit a little bit more and getting us Hear everybody's heart and vision for For you know our team and for and you Know and specifically building around The quarterback and all those different Uh things that come up were just great And I appreciate being a part of that And uh and you know it was it was it was Fun yeah I think you take that and it's Cool to just see how you feel I think From a player's standpoint it was always Getting players you know they come in You're not on the evaluation side of it You know they just they enter your room And if you're a you know quarterback to Enter your room you know get Sam darnold At the Jets or you know these guys that Have joined the room over the course of My career and you just try to help them Wherever they're at right you just you Know you're trying to help them become a Pro learn the process all those things Well this is different because you're on The evaluating side of it and you're
Getting see you know on the front side Of how people think about this and so I Just it was it was a ton of learning for Me and just seeing how those processes Went from the combine to the pro day and Then you bring them into your facility And uh and how the different Interactions what they mean to you how You value them uh was was was cool and Uh and I think it was it was neat to to See these you know these young men kind Of answer the bell at different Different times and different stops and And uh and obviously ultimately Ultimately led to us you know picking Bryce but um but uh but a very very Important process I thought it was Thorough and again everybody involved Made it special and I was encouraged not Only by you know where we were heading You know as far as you know evaluating The pick but also where our organization Is headed just because of the type of People involved Great Josh thanks so much appreciate Your time immediate your whole tight uh Sean will be in just a minute thanks Thanks guys
