Charlotte North Carolina – The Queen City

Charlotte is a city in North Carolina and is often referred to as “The Queen City”. It is home to a large population of almost 800,000. With all four seasons, Charlotte offers a diverse environment with plenty of room for everyone.

The city is situated in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. This area stretches from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and from the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Many of the major inland towns were built near waterfalls or mountain passes.

Charlotte grew as a trading town during the gold rush. During the War Between the States, Union troops attacked nearby settlements. As a result, over 1,300 refugees flooded the city.

The advent of the railroad brought Charlotte into the national economy. By 1860, the city had more than doubled its population. That number was increased to 4,473 by 1870.

After the Civil War, Charlotte grew to become an important manufacturing center. A series of cotton mills were constructed. Other factories produced canteens, gunpowder, and chemical goods.

The arrival of the railroad also helped Charlotte grow into an important railroad junction. Having a rail line connected the city to eastern cities and to Columbia, South Carolina.

The railway ties to the national economy helped Charlotte become a strong part of the country. It made traveling between Raleigh and Charleston easier.

Despite its history as a town, Charlotte was named a “hornet’s nest” by Lord Cornwallis. He was afraid to attack Charlotte.
