Hey Peter Mike K from the Charlotte Observer good to see you again good to See you So having having worked with Ichiro last Season what should we expect from an Evero style defense Say that again the door was closing Sure no problem uh having worked with Deborah last year what what principles And like what General Baseline should we Expect from an everone defense Um I think I think the main thing that We can expect is just the effort from The guys I mean that's the number one Emphasis at this point of the year Um it was an emphasis the entire year Last year and to do that within the Defense you know we don't want to give Them a ton to think about from play to Play we just want them to be able to fly Around and use their abilities so Um that's that's the first thing we we Want to see and expect to see What do you do okay I figured Mike had Two or three questions I got a couple Um coach davidnewton espn.com good to Meet you see you I want to ask you first How is Ellis Shack adjusted to his new Role I think he's adjusted great Um he's a smart Wiley veteran I like to Say and uh he's practicing like like one Of the high level linebackers in the League
Um felt like we had a couple high-level Guys in the past within our schemes and And he looks he looks the part just like You know the previous guys we've worked With And and how much of all will you work With Jeremy Chen and what will be his Role with the linebackers Um I mean a lot of that I defer to coach E as far as what we're doing I think It's pretty pretty public knowledge that He's been a nickel quite a bit with us But beyond that we'll we'll see what he Can do and and I'll defer to the Strategist uh of Koji and and let him Have fun with him But will he actually play I mean I mean One of the linebacker roles that in this Defense at all Uh we'll see at this point obviously we Haven't gotten that far but uh we'll see What the future holds because Um like a lot of our secondary guys we See him as a superhero we just don't Know uh you know which which Cape he'll Wear really from day to day And the last thing I want to ask you is What do you see from Dom Capers of Influence I think one I think is a huge influence Because he's been executing and calling A lot of these calls that we have for The past 30 years plus Um so he's got experience within each
Call against each possible look Um so that's a huge sounding board for All of us but obviously a huge sounding Board for Coach Avro And then I like to sit as close to him As I can just to kind of absorb what I Can in in any meeting setting but I Think it's a huge influence and a huge Help for all of us Thank you very much Thanks David we'll go to Jeff Hawkins And Mike K Uh good afternoon coach can you hear me Okay John Hawkins from Charlotte Post Yes Yes how are you doing uh just uh one Quick question on The Growing Pains of On moving to a three four Um what do you see and the second Question is uh Uh can you describe a bumper pools uh Compete level okay Um I would say the growing pains are are Not necessarily specific to moving to a 3-4 but more specific to having a new Scheme in new language Um you know a lot of the guys have have Already executed the techniques that They're doing now in different schemes They're just learning a new language so Um I think that's probably the main main Aspect of any so-called Growing Pains Um and then bumper is a guy that's come
In and and you know jumped right in as Far as Playbook goes Um you know rookie meetings we have Extra meetings for all the rookies so Um he's showing his you know football Aptitude and learning ability really Quickly and and that's fun to see and Knowing a guy that has that much product Production in the past in his history We're looking forward to the time when We get to see some of that with pads on And that sort of thing but he's jumped Right in as far as his learning Capabilities Uh any questions with his injury Uh I don't think so Um you know I I don't talk Medical stuff it's it's not my uh what I've studied or my background but Um you know he's been able to go to Meetings go to practice and execute some Of the drills and that sort of thing so Um as far as I'm concerned he's right There with us Hey Pete Mike He obviously is a very strong Blitzer uh He's kind of been projected to us as a Guy who's going to move inside outside What have you seen from him and how do You is there a guy that you previously Worked with that you would compare him To potentially Um I think
I'm gonna go backwards with your Question but I think he's pretty unique Um you know there's not a lot of guys That start out on the line of scrimmage And move backwards and he's already done That before we got here uh so that's That's impressive in itself Um yes he's a good Blitzer the stats the Film speaks for itself Um but he he made a number of plays huge Plays off the ball last year as well With whether whether it's an Interception or causing fumbles I mean His production's off the charts so Um you know I'm excited to work with Frankie I'm excited to see him every Single day because he's got that type of Personality but Um yeah I can't really compare him to to Many people he's very unique and uh he You know he's exciting to have uh you Know on our team on the good guys Along that same line having to maneuver Some unique trait guys uh at linebacker What's how what's your working Relationship in practice with tan Oh working relationship is great he's a Little more uh as an outside backer Coach he's a little more related to the D-line than us I mean if you just take a Snapshot You could argue you know you Could call us a 5-2 as opposed to a 3-4 Which is the same as everybody Um but yeah he's he's more of a d-line
Guy except for those few times we get a Chance to be in coverage together and Pass some things off but working Relationship is really smooth so far Let's go over to uh Deshawn and uh Joe Person Good morning coach sister afternoon I'm Behind Deja on the channel 9 Eyewitness News There he is to hear a little more of the Backstory of your relationship with Coach Rivero how that started and now Evolved into your second opportunity With him right Um actually it's our third opportunity We were together at the 49ers that's Where we met we were both quality Control coaches together Um and you know very similar ages so you Know we just became friends on and off The field in the building out of the Building so we've stayed in really close Touch the past 10 years or whatever it's Been since we met 12 13 years so when he Got a chance last year to call it I Thought I had a good chance to jump in With him and turned out I did and then You know relationship wise it's a No-brainer to kind of follow him where I Can if the opportunity arises to follow Him it's pretty easy decision for me If I could follow up on that really Quickly what do you lean from him as You're coaching with him that makes him
So unique or stands out in the way that He does Um I think just the way his his brain Works is very impressive how he runs a Meeting is very impressive Um and to go back how his brain works Just just how he uh basically evaluates An offense and what he likes uh that we Do that can defend that offense Um and he he puts the pieces together in A way that's simple for us the coaches To to sell to the players if we have to Do any selling and for simple for the Players to execute Um I think he really does a great great Job of keeping things simple and Practicing what we're going to play Practicing what he's actually going to Call so those are the things I think That stand out the most for me Coach Joe person with the athletic Welcome Sharla thank you Uh first off uh just since we're getting To know each other Pete or Peter Uh to be perfectly honest I don't care Um so whatever sounds easier for you to Say some people I mean people choose Different ways All the time to address me so I'm not Good either way cool uh you mentioned or You use the Expression superhero a Little bit ago I think in reference to Lukeville is that a term that you and Eve use a lot as I mean is it is there
Anything kind of tied to the defense or Is that just a cool word you'd like to Eat uh it's a word I stole from our Secondary staff our secondary coaches uh Is is related to uh chin Um you know height weight speed and then When we see him actually do things on The field and it's like whoa I didn't Think he could do that and uh And we could relate to anybody but I Stole that word so it's not my And then I had a little offbeat one for Me you were in at Stanford at the same Time as Chris McCaffrey and wondered if You got to know him well or no Ed at all And just your background with Christian Right Um I really didn't get to know his Family very much I mean I think good Enough to say hello and that sort of Thing but uh yeah I spent a lot of time Around Christian never in the same you Know position meeting room obviously Being being different sides of the ball But yeah he's he's awesome I think Anybody in Charlotte knows he's awesome Um you know can pretty much do anything The superhero uh thing fits with him Um but I mean play the piano the Harmonica then whatever he wants to do On the field whatever he wants to do on A basketball court he's like you know The modern version of Bo Jackson or Something uh he's pretty impressive
Thanks very much Pete for sure David we'll go back to you Yeah Peter one to ask you mentioned you I think you worked with uh ISRO at San Francisco it's quality control yes I'm Curious is is that rude for coaches Coming up through the league now more Prevalent now than I mean back in the Way back you thought people went to high School coach a college coach and move Their way up is it seemed like that's Become more Pro and since you guys go Straight to there instead of going Backwards to high school Um I don't know about that I started in High school and then went to the college Level as a college level quality control Followed by the NFL level quality Control so Um I feel like a lot of the veteran Coaches have similar stories and that You know this is how we used to cut up Film and you know everybody's hard hard Story coming up and everything but I Mean coach e started out I think it more At Davis is Alma Mater and then moved up Uh to some NFL opportunities as well Quality control wise so I think it's Fairly common to to start at high school Or college still to this day and I Definitely know there are some guys that Get their first opportunity as well as In the NFL so everybody has a different Story really coaching-wise
Yeah and one more thing what did you Learn from from Dom Capers through this Process about the three four Specifically Oh gosh some of the stuff he talks about Uh that he used to do in the past I Think specifically to inside backers Some of his uh Blitz timing mechanisms Um he's talked about with me and some of The emphasis he used to make with you Know guys like Chad Brown back in the Day and Um you know any number of Carolina Panthers Sam Mills that he worked with In the past Kevin greeney like he has a Lot of great stories about so Um I think specifically to my position I Think a lot of the blitz timing is are Things that he's taught me and and uh You know talked about with me quite a Bit Thanks again for sure Going so we'll go to one more question From scholar Cowan and S.I Skyler go Ahead Hey Peter uh welcome to Charlotte uh Just wanted to talk a little bit more About Shaq I know you mentioned him a Little bit earlier but what does he mean Just for you guys to have him back Because I know that because that was Kind of a decision that you guys made Earlier in the soft season what what is His his value in terms of his leadership
Mean for you guys I think you hit it on The head with that leadership word uh Every guy on the defense looks to him First As far as what the next call is where Should we stand I mean everything so uh His leadership first and foremost has Really stood out to me Um you know just the way he sets the Front with his communication I mean he's Louder than anybody else and he's more Confident in what he's saying than Anybody else so I think that's the first Part that we're so excited about and Then now that OTAs have started and we Can really see some full speed stuff or Uh you know we're still you know shorts And t-shirts but full speed stuff within That is has been impressive so I think I Think we're all really really excited to Have them Thank you Thank you coach appreciate you taking The time all right thank you
