In 1799, Charlotte experienced a gold rush. The city became a central hub for trade and industry. The federal government established a branch of the US Mint here, and now you can visit the Mint Museum in a historic building. This city was so rich in gold that the streets were paved with gold. It’s no wonder that the city is the setting for many movies, including Homeland. It has been chosen twice as a host for presidential nominating conventions.
The city is located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, a band of rolling hills that extends from Georgia to Virginia, and between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and the flat coastal plain of the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Up until the 1750s, the area around Charlotte was home to the Catawba Indians. In 1853, the railroad finally finished the track, giving Charlotte an edge over the half-dozen smaller towns and villages in the region.
