The city’s growth has changed the city’s landscape and character. By the 1950s, Charlotte had grown to become the largest city in the Carolinas. It was a boomtown during the late-20th century, with aggressive businessmen transforming it into a booming metropolis. While the textile and furniture industries suffered, the transportation industry flourished. In spite of this, the city escaped a deep economic depression that ravaged many other cities in the region.
