The largest city in the state of North Carolina, Charlotte is home to over a million residents. The city is diverse, with more than half of the population being white and the rest being black or of various races. The city has the second highest percentage of religious people of any American city; most of the population is affiliated with Protestant Christianity. The city has a large Jewish and Catholic population, and five mosques. There are many different ways to get to know Charlotte.
In the 1750s, the area that became Charlotte was settled by European colonists. The first Europeans were Thomas Spratt and his family. They settled near Elizabeth. This settlement became the first major city in North Carolina. During the American Revolution, the city was occupied by the Unionist General Lord Cornwallis. The city is now home to the Mint Museum. The city was also selected to host two presidential nominating conventions.
The city is also close to several great lakes. It is home to Lake Wylie and Lake Norman. There are many attractions for families and individuals in Charlotte. Taking advantage of its proximity to these waterways and other natural areas is a great way to spend your time.
