Charlotte, North Carolina – A Great Place to Live

The city of Charlotte, North Carolina, was founded in 1768 by English-Irish settlers traveling on the Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia. They chose the name Charlotte after Queen Charlotte, the German-born wife of King George III of England. Charlotte was incorporated in 1768 and the first streets were laid out in 1770.

The city was also the site of the first gold rush in America. In 1799, the federal government opened a branch of the US Mint in Charlotte, and today it has a Mint Museum located in a historic building. The city was home to several gold mines, and the streets were once paved with gold. The city has been featured in movies like “Homeland,” and has twice been selected to host presidential nominating conventions.
