History of Charlotte, North Carolina

Charlotte, North Carolina, is a city of nearly 800,000 residents. It is the largest city in both North Carolina and the Carolinas. The region offers a diverse set of cultural and educational opportunities, with UNC-Charlotte and Queens University as main drawcards.

In the early 20th century, Charlotte became a major center of wholesale and retail trading and distribution. As the textile trade began to decline, a growing banking sector formed.

One of the biggest changes in the economy of Charlotte in the late 1920s was the rise of trucking. The area was home to several of the nation’s largest snack food companies. A number of manufacturing industries, including chemicals and gunpowder, also grew. These changes contributed to the growth of the banking industry in Charlotte.

One of the first commercial ventures in the area was the WBT radio station. This station was the first in the Carolinas. Other companies were founded, including the Mecklenburg Iron Works and the Liddell Foundry.

The advent of the railroads in the 1850s led to the development of a broad economic base. With railroad ties, Charlotte could participate in the nationwide boom. However, the Great Depression of 1929 marked a more serious slump.

The end of the Civil War and the start of the war between the states caused an influx of refugees. Charlotte was a safe haven for over 1,300 people in the final months of the conflict.

By the end of the decade, Charlotte had surpassed Wilmington as the biggest city in both the Carolinas. In 1927, Charlotte opened a branch of the Federal Reserve.
