A tornado watch has been expanded into the Charlotte metro until Friday afternoon as the remnants of Nicole move over the Carolinas with heavy rain, gusty winds and the threat of severe weather. On this special Weather Aware episode of #WakeUpCLT To Go, meteorologist Brittany Van Voorhees and forecaster Larry Sprinkle have the latest conditions across the Charlotte metro as Nicole dumps heavy rain on the region. Brittany and Larry will look ahead to a nasty Friday and update you on when Nicole will move out of North Carolina and South Carolina.
A tornado watch is in effect until 3 p.m. for the following counties in North Carolina: Anson, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, Richmond, Rowan, Stanly and Union. The tornado watch is also in effect for Chesterfield and Lancaster counties in South Carolina until 3 p.m.
A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornadic development. It does not mean a tornado has been spotted on the ground or detected by radar.
Friday is a Weather Aware day for the Charlotte region due to Nicole’s impacts. That label means you should be aware of any potential weather that could impact your personal safety, your family’s safety and protecting any property.
The Charlotte area will see heavy rain at times, localized flooding and the possibility of spin-up tornadoes from Nicole. Up to 4 inches of rain is possible in some areas across western North Carolina. Wind gusts could be as high as 40 mph, according to WCNC Charlotte meteorologist Brittany Van Voorhees.
A flood watch is in effect for several counties in the North Carolina mountains and foothills. A flood watch is in effect until 1 a.m. Saturday for Ashe, Avery, Burke, Caldwell and Watauga counties in North Carolina. Some areas in the mountains could see up to 4 inches of rain. This includes the cities and towns of Blowing Rock, Boone, Lenoir, Morganton and Newland. With the rain falling over a short period of time, this increases the risk of flooding. #Weather #Forecast #WakeUpCLT
