The city claimed the 9th spot on Zagat’s 2016 Hottest Food Cities list, and it’s gone far beyond its barbecue roots (though you can still find a few excellent barbecue places here). Sample dishes like lamb carpaccio or elk chop at the Fig Tree, which pairs elegant menu items with authentic French wines in a cozy setting. Or, take a trip to the Middle East without leaving Charlotte at YAFO Kitchen, where you can enjoy Marrakesh lamb wraps and hummus bowls.
The city also has a lively music and arts scene with a number of venues to catch a show or spend an evening at the symphony or opera. The Mint Museum is North Carolina’s oldest art museum, while the NASCAR Hall of Fame is a must-see for racing fans.

The finance sector is one of the largest employers in Charlotte, and the city’s economy is bolstered by healthcare and energy industries as well. Residents also appreciate the excellent public schools in the area, with Niche giving Charlotte a B+ rating. However, as a city that has been hit hard by many recent natural disasters, living in Charlotte comes with the added risk of hurricanes and flooding. A new resident should plan accordingly with hurricane season lasting from June 1 to November 30 every year. The good news is that the cost of living in Charlotte is lower than the national average.
