Charlotte, North Carolina – History, Culture, and Fun

European colonists first settled in the area of Charlotte, North Carolina in 1755. Thomas Spratt, a lawyer, and his son, Thomas Polk, built a house near the intersection of two Native American trading routes, one going north-south along Great Wagon Road, and the other going east-west along Trade Street.

Charlotte was the site of the country’s first gold rush, and the federal government opened a branch of the US Mint in the city, which houses the Mint Museum. There were many gold mines in Charlotte, and some of the streets were said to be literally paved with gold. Today, you can see some of Charlotte’s historic buildings and streets in popular films, including Homeland. In addition, Charlotte has been chosen twice to host the presidential nominating convention.

The Charlotte area has many great breweries and vineyards. There’s Blue Baze, NoDa Brewing, Legion Brewing, and Stony Mountain Vineyard. There are many unique experiences to be had in the Charlotte area, so be sure to check out a few before you head to the city.

Summer is the hottest season in Charlotte, but nights remain cool and comfortable. Many people come to Charlotte in the summer months to attend concerts or relax at an outdoor pool. There are also a variety of establishments that offer cool drinks and icy treats. Just remember to bring plenty of sunscreen!
