A major discovery of gold in the Charlotte area stimulated the city’s development as a trading hub. By the mid-1850s, Charlotte had grown from a small village into a bustling town.
In 1862, the Confederacy opened a naval yard in Charlotte, and the town was named “Charlotte.”
A street railway was also introduced in the city. After a short run, the last street railway ceased operations in 1938.
Charlotte was home to several breweries, including the nation’s first craft brewery, the Olde Mecklenburg Brewery. Other notable breweries include the Catawba Brewing Company and Triple C Brewing.
