Justin Houston: I wanted to play for someone I could trust

Houston shared his excitement to come play for Frank Reich, his impressions of Brian Burns, and being an experienced veteran in the locker room.

Know Steve Reed from the associate press Welcome to uh the Carolinas we said Why did you choose Your flight Coach Frank It was simple for a close friend call I knew right then as soon as he called Hung up the phone I told my wife we're Going to Carolina So it was an easy decision And why what about you I trust him yeah He's a stand-up guy what you see is what You get he's he's going to be straight Up for it which is the guy that you know You can count on I think that like I Said the biggest thing is trust I wanted Somebody I can trust I went through this process start for You is this just this week it pops up First Uh for a couple months now he called Yeah I don't remember exactly when he Called but it's been a couple months Uh just getting on the same page with The contract The car YouTube I'm sorry Joe person Would be athletic it's a part of you too As a pet you kind of didn't necessarily Have to be at all yeah I was in no rush We could have waited another weekend I Wouldn't been there Could you expand on that just after 13 Years now and knowing your body and kind Of how to prepare for the season Like that oh yeah it's just uh to me it

Was just let's work on the body at this Point in time I think I was able to Control more of what I'm doing and more I think once you start practicing it and Hitting against hitting each other it's More maintaining the body than building The body it's hard to build the body When you're breaking it down every day So right now as soon as you start it's More about maintaining getting back Together so when I wasn't here I was Able to build because I wasn't hitting Me so it's able to work on my body and Continue to grow You know that's how this game goes You've got to stretch I think between Like seven eleven last year where it Started flicking a little bit talk about The journey last year you know in Baltimore and when it really started Coming together for that defense and for You in particular Uh lastly I think I got off to a pretty Uh great start uh I was steady and in Communication I think it was just a Great defense at the point in time then Once it's hard to get sex when the ball Game is close I think uh especially when Lamar went down the game changed for us A little bit every ball game was close So it's hard to win get put pressure on The quarterback when they're running the Ball that's impossible so I think that Was the biggest thing that happened with

That team What are your impressions of Brian Burns Right off the bat for the guy you just Met I think he's a great guy I think He's a leader I love the way he Practiced I love the way he worked uh I think I'm gonna love playing with him It's been a while That that kind of talent don't come Around often I think he's proven already I think everybody sees him know what he Got and the sky's the limit for that kid So I think it's the summer it's the Situation that we can help each other Leader in this group talk about your Approach to merging into that as you Help Mentor those guys well I'm not Going to force myself on anyone I'm an Open book and I'll let the whole room Know I'm open books or any questions They want to ask and the answer I would I would answer them but I'm not going to Force myself on anybody on that's not The way I roll so like I said I'm an Open book though anybody that need help Or want ideas I'm here for it Oh we met for a brief moment we talked For a little bit but we haven't really Gotten the details but you yes you're Right with the teams he have and outside Linebackers I don't know not one guy That didn't succeed in his uh his Defense so I think I'm gonna love Playing in this defense

Frank talked about how you enjoyed being A mentor next to younger players Um who did you Mentor in Indianapolis Oh well I was the oldest guy in the room So anybody I was like I said I'm an open Book so it's pretty much anybody on the D-line at that point in time because we Was all in one room So anybody that needed help you know What I'm saying it was a little stuff it Was whether it was on the field or off The field or anything in life I was just Trying to help was there a mentor of Yours that you looked up to Um Well I was blessed when I came in I had I had a couple good guys especially the Tombow Ali when I first got in he was a Great mentor for me I think The way I work came from him I was able To see a true veteran work in a All-Pro Guy as soon as I got in so it was easier For me whether a lot of guys come in When they got young guys around him they Didn't have a true veteran but I had a Proven veteran already so it was I just I followed him Earlier Defensive man you've played outside Linebacker what do you like about Playing outside like that I feel like we get to do more you get to Show more of my ability than whether I Feel like a 4-3 just down in attack

You're not even reading you can't see What's going on whether than 3-4 I like Standing up and I get to see I like to Play to play you know what I'm saying so If I can see the play from watching film I know it give me ideas on what plays Are coming with my hand down I can't see Much but the guy in front of me so after Planning some playing so much for Standing up I kind of hate putting my Hand down unless I'm about to rush Justin Frank mentioned you really Becoming a good speed When did that sort of transition take Place in your career uh Samba taught me To use I would say Tom and Joe Kim Joe Kim is with the Patriots now but them Two guys taught me to use what I had you Know I'm saying so I really didn't know What I had until I got with them and They was they broke it down for me and Made it easier for me to learn so like I Said them two guys I the way I Rush the Way I think about the passwords tomboy And Joe Kim taught me everything Have an idea when you'll start Practicing uh not sure they got a game Plan for me so whatever they say I'm I'm On I'm on board It just uh they say if you don't use it You're a loser I think it's that that's The biggest thing you don't the older You get the more you have to do it and It's not really working out it's more

Like rehab prehab stuff you know what I'm saying so you don't really get a True break in the off season like I go Right right to maintenance take care of My body's bending my body back up doing A little stuff so I think that's the Biggest thing to stay on top of it You do mentally spiritually to add into That especially I'm a big believer in Christ and I it's just my wife helps me With that in that area she's About books all the time we always Reading and praying together so you Always keep me locked in and focused on The high five Impressions about you know Taylor Moaning some of the guys on the ends Here the book in tackles from Carolina I think They're young I think they're developing I think they're going to be real good Though I think I think we got a special unit here so I Think everybody's once they start Believing in them say I think the Biggest thing is confidence it's hard to Believe in yourself when the game's not Going the way you desire to go so once The game start going the way we wanted To go the confidence will come and the Sky's the limits for them Sean Williams is here talking about About you guys Are doing Friday Burns and you said it's

Going to be a kind of pick your poison Up here you got a double team on offense So you kind of view it the same way yes I love that uh the thought of that Because you don't know which way you got To slide so most times you have if you Just got one pass rush you know who About to get the heat the whole game but In this case you got two so you don't Know which way to slide coming so you Don't know who's coming who's dropping It's really it make it real hard on the Offense so I think it's going to help us All Reputation throughout the week like This For him You will know everybody that played from I believe feel the same way I feel He's a trustworthy guy I don't think That's the number one thing is in this Game you want to find somebody you can Trust in what that's going to stand on The table whatever they say this is what It is And once you got that I think it's Easier to go sell out and give it all For that guy
