Working Between the Painted Lines | Behind the Crown with CDOT

Few feelings match the satisfaction of seeing a perfect line painted onto a city street. One of those feelings is knowing that your work keeps thousands of motorists and pedestrians safe as they navigate our roadways. From line striping to traffic calming installations, CDOT’s transportation operations crew is an integral part of maintaining more than 2,400 miles of Charlotte streets.

Every line you see in the city of Charlotte is something we take care of Each and every day I like seeing the Instant gratification of you know Putting a line down and seeing it nice And crisp and perfect and how it's Supposed to be once I started doing it I Realized how much I actually didn't pay Attention to a lot of the stuff that was On the street that I do now I I had no Clue that's probably the best thing I've Learned here is to play with the team You know trust all of them and we all Play as one and work as one and it works Out Well I tell my family and friends that I'm a big part of the city my name is Derell Jones and I'm a technician with The payment markings we help keep the Street safe uh every day it feels good To see I work I get to ride and see my Work and I show them to them a lot of Times when we ride and I pointed out to Them hey I did that it just feels good To know you help contribu into the City And help keeping it safe lately it's Been mostly this probably about 90% Speed cushions uh versus doing the Actual lines just because they're so Popular now I'm going to do an overall Make sure we have enough room my name is Nick Baker uh I'm a crew chief at Tod Most challenging part of the job I think Is definitely working within traffic uh

Just because you know Charlotte is a Fast growing city so there's a lot of Traffic on a daily basis and it's just Being safe around that traffic knowing How to set up work zones and work safely Safely around all the cars zipping by as Far as SKS you really just I think the Main thing is communication you have to Be able to communicate well you have to Be able to uh listen and take Direction And also just be self motivated a little Patient because as I say you're dealing With the public a lot of the times and Uh you just have to understand that like I say everybody's in a rush we have a Crew of right now we're about six my Name is Scott Harris my title is the Field operation supervisor payment Markets everybody knows what what they Job is for the day they get they get Together hey it's my it's my turn to do This my turn to do that and they just They just mesch so well together I mean They've been working together probably Anywhere from three to probably 10 years More times until the whole thing is [Music] Down we have fun here [Music] Sometimes

Charlotte has all four seasons but is most notable for its beautiful fall foliage and mild winters. The city is also a short drive to the mountains and has gorgeous beaches. For a unique outdoor experience, head to the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden for Holidays at the Garden which runs from November through December. The garden is lit with over a million lights and hosts a variety of holiday events.
