Charlotte North Carolina – History, Culture, and Sports

The Charlotte area was settled by European settlers around 1755. The first settler, Thomas Spratt, settled near the Elizabeth neighborhood. Later, another settler, Thomas Polk, great-uncle of U.S. President James K. Polk, settled in the city and built a house on a intersection of Native American trade paths. One of these paths ran north-south along the Great Wagon Road and the other ran east-west along Trade Street.

Charlotte was named after Queen Sophia Charlotte, the wife of King George III, who ruled Great Britain from 1760 to 1820. The city is home to a number of professional sports teams, including the Minor League Baseball (MLB) Charlotte Knights, a Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. There is also the National Basketball Association (NBA) Charlotte Bobcats and the WNBA Charlotte Sting. In the NFL, Charlotte is home to the Carolina Panthers. Other sports teams in Charlotte include the Charlotte Eagles of the United Soccer League (USL), USL W-League Charlotte Lady Eagles, and Charlotte Soccer Club.

Charlotte is located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The Piedmont region is a broad belt of rolling hills that extends from Virginia to Georgia, and from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the flat coastal plain along the Atlantic Ocean. Up until the 1750s, the area was inhabited by the Catawba Indians. The city is also home to many major corporations, including BankAmerica, Lowe’s, and specialty steel maker Nucor. The climate of Charlotte is subtropical and humid, with mild winters and warm summers. The hottest month is July with average temperatures of 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
